Review summary

Cafe Degas offers an enchanting dining experience reminiscent of a Parisian bistro. Guests rave about the "wonderful ambience" and "excellent food." The French onion soup and escargot are crowd favorites, and the "great wine list" complements the meal perfectly. Despite occasional service hiccups, it's a beloved New Orleans staple.

Cafe Degas is an elegant restaurant with a live tree in the center! It our waitress was very knowledgeable about the menu and made several suggestions. The French onion soup was delicious and the dressing on the Crab Salad light and tangy! They have an extensive wine list especially by the glass but the piece de resistance was desserts! We had the Paris Brest which is flaky pastry with praline creme and hazel nuts!

Everything was wonderful! Thanks so much for accommodating 13 people. I know you’re a French restaurant but could you please offer a small Caesar salad?

Sadly, our long-awaited return to Cafe Degas was disappointing. They ran out of glasses and soup spoons. We had to eat our soup with a teaspoon. There were no grillades in my grillades and grits, just a few bite-sized morsels of veal. My husband’s liver came with grits instead of mashed potatoes.; and the vegetables on the side were inedible. There was no bacon in the bacon and Swiss omelet. The desserts disappeared from the dessert menu; the freezer broke. The wait staff were sloppily dressed. Not sure if we’ll return in the future.

We joined 2 locals for dinner last night. It was our first time to eat there. We ‘re visiting from Austin, Texas, and all I can say is that Cafe Degas is one more reason to come back to New Orleans. The atmosphere is lovely, quirky and warm. Our server, Kenzie, was so friendly and welcoming, and she used to live in Austin, but the highlight was the food! The escargot was fantastic, the fried oysters were some of the best we’ve ever had, 3 of us couldn’t resist the swordfish special, which was divine, with perfectly cooked asparagus and haricot vert, but our friend ordered the lamb lollipops, which she said were exquisite. We feel badly that we closed the place, but the staff was so kind when we left. It was a perfect evening. We’ll have to eat here every time we visit the City. Our girlfriend who introduced us to this restaurant said she has such fond memories of Cafe Degas because she and her grandmother ate here often. It was a favorite of her grandmother. Now it’s a favorite of ours.

I've always loved Cafe Degas, and my most recent visit was lovely. The atmosphere is magical, as you feel like you are dining at a cafe in Paris. We were seated in the covered area along the tree lined sidewalk. I love being able to people watch on this beautiful, tree lined avenue in one of the oldest areas of the city. The food was very good and the service was, as well. Our only issue was the drink service. Our cocktails took a very long time to arrive because the bartender was swamped. One bartender on an extremely busy night just isn't enough. All in all though, we were pleased with our time.
