Bringing 1940s Paris to modern-day Edinburgh, Café St Honoré restaurant is a charming bistro serving up traditional French cuisine (with a few Scottish favourites thrown in) to a loyal clientele. Tucked away on a picturesque cobbled lane in the New Town, the cosy dining room at Café St Honore, with mirrored walls and black-and-white tiled floors, provides an atmospheric retreat. The team here are passionate about local, organic produce, so the menu changes daily. There are prix fixe menus on offer at lunch and dinner if you’re after a bargain, or just need an excuse to indulge in dessert. In the evening, a seasonal menu du jour is available alongside the full a la carte, which features dishes like roast pheasant with red cabbage and pancetta; Our warming Cafe St Honore Cassoulet; and vanilla crème brûlée. The wine list features some excellent French wines – a real treat for novices and connoisseurs alike.

Good food that has become rather expensive. £34 for main courses at dinner. I do like this place, but it has become impersonal. The front of house staff now change too often and the chef is rarely seen. I come here nearly every month and regret the inconsistency in the service. Skilled staff have been replaced by less skilled staff. Little acts of generosity are no more. People need to be reminded that hospitality requires some generosity... A little effort please!

Really lovely setting once seated, the little lane needs to be clean as if l was a passing potential customer it would put me off with the rubbish in the lane. Food was really good but a little rich in butter, especially the fish dish. Staff lovely but with only one other customer it did lack some ambience, but that can’t be helped.

I can't believe I've never been to Cafe St Honoré before. It is everything you would want from a French/Scottish restaurant; delicious, locally sourced food cooked with French passion and flair. The wine list ain't bad either, and reasonably priced. I came away planning my next visit, which I am equally sure will not be my last.

Just a delight all around. Incredible menu that changes daily, freshest ingredients, attentive and warm service, moody classic bistro ambiance. Full of locals, not a tourist in sight (aside from our family who was welcomed warmly). I am so glad we ate here on one of our 3 nights in town. It’s no wonder they have been open for almost 20 years!

The overall environment is excellent, with the warm glow of candles creating a romantic and intimate atmosphere, which was a major reason we chose this restaurant for our Valentine’s Day celebration. The service was also impressive—our waitress was attentive and always available whenever we needed assistance. We appreciated the small but thoughtful gesture of helping to hang our jackets. However, the food did not meet our expectations. The starters were acceptable, but the main courses were rather disappointing. While the restaurant exudes a sense of luxury, with a set dinner menu offering only a few select options, we found the dishes themselves lacking in quality. I ordered the pork as my main course, but it was overly oily and fatty, making it difficult to finish. Although I could see that the chef had put thought into the presentation and details, the overall taste was underwhelming. My partner opted for a medium-cooked steak with chips. Unfortunately, she found the steak to be undercooked on the inside, while the exterior was burnt and had an unpleasant, aged taste. The chips were overly soft, lacking any crispness, and seemed to be saturated with oil. Additionally, the snacks were excessively sweet, which further detracted from our dining experience. The total bill came to £133 for two people, which is in line with what one would expect from a high-end restaurant. However, given the disappointing quality of the food, we felt that the experience did not justify the price. This left us feeling somewhat dissatisfied, and it ultimately put a slight damper on what was meant to be a special Valentine’s Day celebration.

Another great meal at one of my favourite Edinburgh restaurants. Café St. Honoré is a fantastic and authentic French bistro with a wonderful seasonal menu which is updated regularly. The quality of the food is outstanding and the staff are friendly and knowledgeable. One of our party has some food allergies and they made sure he was able to make informed choices to get a meal he would enjoy. The gluten free bread is amazing and the chefs were on top form. Eating here is always a pleasure and we'll definitely be back again.
