After 40 years, my customers still tell me what a delightful discovery it is to step out of a Boston alley and into the heart of Mexico. That is exactly what I had envisioned when I decorated the coffered door and walls of my restaurant with the bright Talavera tiles from Puebla, Mexico. Casa Romero is located in the midst of glamorous Back Bay at 30 Gloucester and offers the best traditional Mexican food in Boston.

We had a reservation at 7 pm for 6 people. The entire party arrived by 7:02 pm, we were hounded by the staff and rushed by the server because there was a private event at 830, treated us as an inconvenience. maybe don’t allow a reservation at 7 pm if this would be a potential problem. I’ve never been so rushed by a server in my life. I then got the wrong food item but didnt say anything, only to have the server say at the end of the meal he noticed I had gotten beef rather than chicken, laugh about it and say that beef is better anyway. And finally we get served the check which has tip already included. Then because at that point it was only around 7:45, they took their sweet time closing out our check. This place was terrible will not be back. 0/10.

Sensational food. No on the other available cocktails - I can’t drink tequila so margaritas were not on the list for me, however my party liked the margaritas they ordered. Exceptional environment for those who love a cozy space and really good food!!!

Clearly the best Mexican restaurant in Boston. Don’t let the alleyway off Gloucester dissuade you. A hidden gem. Recommend having a reservation. We have been there many times for dinner over the last 20 years!

We don't go out to eat often, but Casa Romero had been one of my favorite restaurants for years, so that's where we took some friends for a birthday last night. I was disappointed. The food, including the nicely seasoned cochinita pibil, was quite good. The problems were: 1) high noise level--the four of us had to shout to be heard across our small table; 2) too many tables crowded into the dining area; and 3) our strong sense of being hustled to finish and leave starting only 45 min. after our 6:30 reservation time. Regarding the latter, the restaurant makes it clear that parties of 4 or fewer are expected to leave within 1.5 hours, but only half of that time had elapsed when staff began trying to take our dishes away. There were multiple visits of staff to our table asking if they could take our not-quite-finished dishes away. We were well-behaved and did leave within our 1.5-hour period. Less important: what happened to the nopalitos salad that used to be on the menu? I missed that.

Overall, it was fine. Guacamole was served as a tiny pile on a lettuce leaf which was strange, salsa tasted like an Italian red sauce. Chicken enchiladas verde were tasty, but the accompanying tiny pile of beans & rice seemed an afterthought.

Food was great, we got ceviche, pork taco and ahi tuna tacos. All were delicious. Despite being crowded our server was very attentive and friendly. Fun place we would highly recommend.
