- WWilliamVIPPhiladelphia County •52 reviews5.0Dined 1 day agoI used to be an habitue to Fishtown 50 years ago and there have been considerable changes since then. Bastia is located in the Anna & Bell Hotel which itself is beautifully decorated. Bastia is named after a town in Northern Corsica and is mainly Corsican cuisine perhaps with some Sardinian influences. It has an incredible wine and alcohol list with obscure wines from all over the Mediterranean (there is one wine from Maryland). There is an extensive list of Italian liquors and digestifs. Our waiter was excellent and very knowledgeable about the wine and food. His recommendations were spot on. The menu has a lot of terms that may seems strange but these are mostly alternative names for fish and pasta. I had the mallordeus which is similar to gnocchi with what some describe as a Bolognese sauce. The seasoning in this sauce is very different and nicely spicy. This dish goes with a hearty red wine. A friend had osso bucco which was amazingly tender. The other people in my party had the orata fka dorade. This is a fish probably best not covered up by strong sauces and the flavor of the fish did come through. We went early on a weekday and the place was quiet enough to carry on a conversation even though it filled up a little before we left. This is a major plus considering all the noise currently in Philly restaurants especially if you want to "dine" and not just eat. Our server said it can get more active on weekends and the bar is very large. The tables have plenty of space between them. The restaurant says it's business casual but most people were casual casual. The restaurant has a cosmopolitan feel somewhat unusual for Philly. Prices for the food are reasonable considering the quality. Wine prices, especially by the bottle, are high but that may be due to the rarity of the selection. You can apparently order a bottle and they are able to seal up what you don't finish and you can take it home. All in all an excellent addition to the Philly restaurant scene.More infoBastiaPrice: Expensive• Mediterranean• Fishtown•4.8
