da Umberto is an excellent Italian restaurant, with a rather large menu and daily specials as well. The tables are nicely set, with comfortable chairs, and the tables are widely spaced, which in New York is a rarity. We ordered the red Super Tuscan as a wine choice (there were only four choices of red wines). The wine was delicious but the pour was not very generous. Our appetizers were the Orto, a luscious preparation of seasonal vegetables, and fried artichokes from the special menu. The artichokes were tasty but so crispy that my partner had difficulty eating them. Our main courses were superb--I ordered the filet of lamb on the specials menu and my partner ordered the Elefante on the main menu. The elefante is a thinly pounded veal chop--a huge bone and the meat taking up an entire plate. Amazing to look at as to eat. Portions are large, and you would be likely to have left-overs to take home. We had the Napoleon for dessert--tasty but nothing that special. We ordered regular coffee with it, which, I must say was awful--weak with no flavor, and $5 a cup! Such a shame to spoil a lovely dinner that way. Service was rather slow but competent.

Always amazing food and fabulous waiters. Our family has been going to da Umberto for more than 30 years. Old school NYC vibe. Mushroom ravioli is phenomenal!
