- JJohnLos Angeles •152 reviews5.0Dined on Dec 25, 2024Christmas Eve could be a disaster. I don'tl ike to go out on holidays, but we wanted to take an old person friend of 93 out. My Laura chose Laconda Portofino. We had been there before a couple of times. The last time I walked out because the Maiitre D' would not give our deuce a decent table...I wrote it up on the web...not a good experience. But, I remembered the food as excellent and why not try again. the restaurant is very convenient. Last night, nice greeting, seated at a nice table at 5:30--great to go early. It turned out that this was a major differentiator. The waiter, Angelo, very nice, fun and skillful. The food was excellent. Some surprises, the salmon carpaccio was not really carpaccio, thin sliced salmon. But it was good. The calamari fritte was very good, not enough sauce. My pasta carbonnara was excellent. Angelo helped with a moderately high priced wine--it was excellent. It got much better as we let it breathe in the glass. Nice glassware. The place was very busy and the food was "pushed"...the mains arrived before we finished the appetizers. Everything seemed rushed. It was clear that they were busy and did not want to provide proper service. There was no rizzoto becasue it takes too long. The busser totally screwed up by taking Laura's pasta, actually mine, left overs and not boxing up--threw perfectly good food away when we had asked to take it home. Angelo made up for this boo boo by giving her an extra panna cota desssert which she will enjoy today, Christmas. Over-all an excellent experience, primarily because of Angelo. We will return in January and hope to have Angelo serve us in a much less rushed manner. The menu is exciting and it will be fun if we can take our time and enjoy this excellent restaurant. If that works out we will be regulars. We are very experienced travelers and diners. We are headed to Italy for a month in May so Laconda Portofino is a "warm up". Thank you.More infoLocanda PortofinoPrice: Expensive• Italian• Santa Monica•4.7
