Sassoon was awarded the Military Cross for "conspicuous gallantry" and later won acclaim for his writing. Nestling in the heart of the beautiful Kentish Weald-the Garden of England, the Star and Eagle Hotel is located in the village of Goudhurst. Standing over 400ft above sea level, there are outstanding views of the surrounding orchards and hop gardens for which the area is renowned. Dating back to the 14th century, the Star and Eagle has played a significant role in the local history, and was once reputed to have been an ancient monastery. Relics of the vaulted stonework of the period are still visible in some parts of the building. During the 18th century the Inn became the headquarters of the "Hawkhurst Gang", who robbed and terrorised the surrounding district, and planned smuggling raids. Today, behind its attractive timbered gables, the Star and Eagle offers all the comfort and facilities of a 20th century hotel with the charm and atmosphere of a bygone era. Open throughout the year, the Star and Eagle is less than three miles off the main A21 road with easy access.

Open Tuesday to Sunday with food served all day from noon.We now have 3 Giant heated Tipis, they provide lots of fresh air and a lovely open environment, they are also heated.Formerly an 18th Century farmhouse boasting exposed beams, oak floors, exposed brickwork and oak tables. This leads to a very relaxed and cosy atmosphere with candle lit tables and real flame stoves.The cuisine is typically modern European, classically cooked using cornerstones such as stock pots to create their sauces with a brigade that has a passion for what they do.     We visited Mildred's for lunch to celebrate my daughter's 18th, two of our party were vegetarian so it was nice for them to have the full choice of the menu. The food was absolutely delicious, we particularly loved the red pepper romesco, the arancini and kimchi gyoza. I had the masala brunch which was lovely. We couldn't fault anything and can't recommend it highly enough. Even my husband, who as a meat-eater and was slightly nervous about finding something he liked, raved about the food. Definitely pay it a visit, vegan or not!

    Cannot fault this place. 2nd time coming back and we had the valentines menu this time. The food is fantastic and service is incredible. Staff are so lovely. Always a great time here.

    Absolutely could not have been more perfect. The service was impeccable and we were made to feel most welcome. Food was wonderful - really good quality and quantity. We were hugely surprised by an unexpected Happy Birthday plate of strawberries, cream and a cupcake for one of our party whose birthday it was on that day. Really made his day and ours...as we had not told the not the birthday when booking. Staff could not have done more to make the meal very special.
