A landmark (formerly the Ocean View Inn) and a local’s favorite Kona restaurant since 1934, the building housing The Fish Hopper has been beautifully restored to expand upon its spectacular ocean views. We had a 7 PM reservation with a "view table" request. Several walk-up customers were seated before us. At 7 PM, we were told that "people aren't leaving their tables fast enough" after they finish so we'd have to wait. At 7:15, we were seated at a table in the bar (obstructed view). The food was average at best and extremely expensive. Our waitress was wonderful, but everything else was mediocre or lower.

Not the first time in the Fish Hopper, maybe the last. Got a 8:30 pm reservation, called to confirm we will not be affected by the kitchen closing at 9 pm. Food was served promptly. At 9:24 pm we asked for hot tea and the waiter offered tea bags to go, was quite rude and visibly upset that we called him out that tea has nothing to do with the kitchen. Did not order desserts. I can see why the rating went significantly down since we visited first time a few years ago. Will consider other restaurants around next time.

Upon ordering we clarified the amount of portion of the Ono fish. The response after checking out the price at 39.99 for 6 oz of a native fish to the island was the snarky reply “Your in Downtown Hawai’i. At the Kona fish market it’s priced at $30.00 per pound. Everyone understands COGS . The fish was $11.22 keeping in mind using a retail market not “Wholesale”. The chef crushed each dish ordered but that reply started the dinning off to a rocky start.

Great food and excellent tropical drinks. Ate here 3 times during our 2 week stay in Kona and truly enjoyed each visit. The only thing I would pass on is the calamari (all tentacles). Different server each visit and all were friendly and attentive. Prices slightly high on drinks, but this IS Hawaii (much more reasonable if you go in the small bar during the 3-5 Happy Hour).

Lovely view raised up above street level and looking over the road to the ocean and sunset. Open air dining with steak and seafood fare including daily specials. Service was good, food was tasty, and they have a gluten free menu available. The cocktail I had was overly sweet and almost undrinkable. Stick with wine and beer. Private parking available in back of restaurant.

I had the fish and chips and they are amazing. Fries were crisp and hot and the fish is ono instead of the typical cod and it’s moist and flavorful. The batter is not greasy with just the right amount of mild crunch. So good . . .

Fish and shrimp was nicely prepared and presented, but overpriced for the quantity. Cocktail was mostly ice for a typically chilled/stirred drink. Fries came out of the kitchen cold and the service was hit and miss from our assigned wait staff.
