Bar Chelou is a neo-bistro that is both a distillation of Chef Doug Rankin's broad gastronomic interests and a deeply personal expression of his individualistic style. 'Chelou' (French slang for ‘strange’ or ‘unexpected’) is both the name and unifying theme of the restaurant, which draws from a range of culinary traditions and service styles to create something personal, novel, and fun. The restaurant is located within the Pasadena Playhouse complex. If you plan to visit the Playhouse after dinner, please book a 5:30p reservation to ensure ample timing for your dinner. We also offer concession cocktails before a showing and during intermission.     The venue is beautiful and the tea is worth the price. There were four of us and we all ordered the traditional tea rather than the, more expensive, huntington tea option. Soup or salad is an additional cost, but the white bean and panchetta soup was delicious. There are alcohol and cocktail options as well. The aperol spritz were good if you like that drink. The tea selection was simple and every each tea we ordered was delicious. The tea pots were plain white and small but they will refill your tea pot with hot water a couple times. The scones, sandwiches, and sweets were mostly delicious and unique. Our one complaint is the ham and cheese sandwich was plain and dry. It didn't wow us like the lamb sandwich. We would prefer an egg sandwich or chicken salad sandwich instead. The James beard sandwich was an underwhelming mayo sandwich as well. The service was impeccable. Isaac was a great server. Isaac and other staff were thoughtful and preemptively met our needs. They provided a free slice of chocolate cake for a birthday as well. Overall, we had a great experience. I will definitely come back!

    After not going there for several years after not being pleased with our first few visits after they opened, we'd read nothing but stellar reviews, so we thought we'd give it another try. We were not disappointed The quality of the food, service and the overall place was stellar! Out waiter, Thomas (a 30-yr. Veteran of many Pasadena mainstays), could not have been more helpful, knowledgeable, efficient or charming! Food was on par with the best places around town, in terms of taste, creativity, quantity and quality! We re definitely going back, and soon!

    Food is amazing. We had spaghetti with meat sauce, Margherita pizza, arugula salad, and gelato. Pasta was chewy/al dente and the meat sauce was the perfect accompaniment. Pizza crust was very light, sauce and cheese were very flavorful. Salad was topped with really good parmesan cheese. The gelato was the perfect ending. Everything tastes homemade with love. Although Italian food can be heavy, this meal left us feeling satisfied, but not overly full (which is perfect). We have lactose and gluten sensitivities, so I was prepared to not feel great later, but I had no bad affects from the meal. Service was great! Very friendly and personable. Definitely recommend Bulgarini if you want an authentic Italian meal that won't leave you feeling heavy.
