The steak pie was delicious and substantial. The French wine, Merlot, at £25, was very good. The Affogato was nice too but I would have appreciated a biscotti with it. Our waitress was very pleasant.

Lovely restaurant with a good menu. The famous steak and ale pie takes 30 minutes to prepare but is worth the wait. Restaurant is busy so need to book.

We had the pie and cod loin for mains. For starter we had the prawns and the ham hock. All was delicious! Bill came to £85 without drinks, which is expensive for pub food but as I mentioned, it was tasty so no complaints

Food was tremendous. Setting was interesting and comfortable. Service was attentive without being overbearing. Location absolutely perfect. Very likely to go again on any future visits to York.

Not the best experience this time. The service was very slow to start but maybe the waiters were changing shifts, since we had different people serving us at the beginning. The young man who turned out to be our permanent waiter was very nice but the girls before him were a bit vacant and not too efficient. The food was average-we have had better times here where food was converted. I just think they’ve got too many covers and not enough staff to provide a good quality meal for every customer. They could really do something fabulous with the outside decor.

As much as I thought the food was first class I can not believe you get a pie and mash with no veg at all , I may have missed it on menu (I don’t know) but you shouldn’t get pie and mash with no veg whatever the occasion

There's a lot of attention on the famous pie so we just had to try it and I must admit we were not disappointed! Absolutely beautiful...
