Hayes Street Grill is a neo-traditional fish house in San Francisco's Civic Center district, across the street from the Performing Arts Center, opposite Davies Symphony Hall and a block from both the Opera House and City Hall. We use an international mix of recipes, unified with a theme of fish and seafood. Above every other consideration, we want the freshness and pristine quality of the fish, produce, and naturally-raised meats to speak for themselves.

The Hayes Street Grill's walls are covered with autographed photos of the artists who consider the restaurant their club. Though we've remodeled since our opening 33 years ago, the original brass coat hooks along the walls remain, as does our founding philosophy of cooking only the food we would serve at home to our families, albeit dressed up a little, with a religious dedication to wholesomeness.

The fish was so fresh and delicious. My sea bass was cold when it arrived but still very tasty. They serve French fries as the standard side but I wish the would offer a healthier option like steamed rice. Our waiter was professional but a tad curt and dismissive but hey, it’s all about the food anyway!

Hayes Street Grill is both a tradition (for evening performance attendees) and traditionalist -- nothing fancy, but there IS a quiet elegance to the consistent quality and understated but truly good flavoring of its dishes. I always get the black cod and it is always a worthwhile trade-off: having to pick out the few bones other venues carefully remove in exchange for flavor quality a cut above most other cod venues. The chevre/almonds salad is simple and nicely flavorful, the carrot cake unusual in its blending of marshmallow into the promised cream cheese topping . . .and delicious. While table service is efficient and friendly, it can be just a tad slow. Bar beverages can require a wait -- there is one small bar and, apparently, it gets overwhelmed. Tables are close together but it works -- staff manages to squeeze in without disrupting you and/or neighbors. Still, HSG has been and will continue to be one of our go-to reliables on theater, jazz, symphony, and other San Francisco event nights. Good food from a simple but well-considered menu, nice servers & maitre d', pleasant if tight-ish venue, fair prices. Do go there. ☺️

Dinner with our friends at 5 PM just before a SFJazz show featuring Mavis Staples The Grill was crowded and both the staff and clientèle were older. The restaurant was nice. The venue is done is classic SF restaurant. I asked the waitress "what is the best thing today" She responded by asking whether it was my first time at the Hayes Street Grill. I responded "No, but I have not been in 35 years"/She looked around slowly and said "nothing has changed. Even the staff is mostly the same, clients too. We had a nice traditional meal and went to SFJazz nearby for an outstanding concert. The Hayes Street Grill is a traditional SF grill: impeccable food (mostly seafood) simply prepared. We all had seafood which everyone reported to be "exceptional". The experience was perfect.

Our server forgot our salad and side of fries. It worked out as we had plenty of food. Food was brought out quickly and was delicious.
