Hayes Street Grill is a neo-traditional fish house in San Francisco's Civic Center district, across the street from the Performing Arts Center, opposite Davies Symphony Hall and a block from both the Opera House and City Hall. We use an international mix of recipes, unified with a theme of fish and seafood. Above every other consideration, we want the freshness and pristine quality of the fish, produce, and naturally-raised meats to speak for themselves.

The Hayes Street Grill's walls are covered with autographed photos of the artists who consider the restaurant their club. Though we've remodeled since our opening 33 years ago, the original brass coat hooks along the walls remain, as does our founding philosophy of cooking only the food we would serve at home to our families, albeit dressed up a little, with a religious dedication to wholesomeness.

The crab and salad was not totally clear to us when ordered as it is crab that the customer must remove from the shell along with a salad. Not a deal killer as they provided all of the essentails as well as a lemon with a warm moist towel. Tbe chicken salad with the asian noodles was a little disappointing in that I am used to having noodles that were a bit more crisp. The flavors were great and the presentation where they separated the noodles, chicken and cabbage was wonderful. The issue was with the noodles in that have you ever had pasta where it stuck together in clumps? Well, the asian noodles in this case were clumped together. The creme brûlée did not fail and was just yummy. One recommendation is to make sure if you want a "hot" cup of coffee you need to ask them for one as the first cup and refill were Luke warm. Upon asking for a "hot" cup of coffee, it was hot! I like my coffee hot. We had a performance at the symphony at 1400h with a reservation at 1230h. Had a great leisurely lunch in one of SF's classic restaurants. We will be back but will avoid the chicken salad with the asian noodles.

Very fresh fish and salad. Steelhead grilled to perfection! Sherry vinaigrette, simple, but always delicious. Ordered a second lime mousse!

Great food and excellent service. I recommend fixing the bench seat as the seam between the two tables was exactly where I sat and they were different heights thus creating back pain from the angle! That's all!!

Creme brûlée has charcoal burned sugar at the top, lack of depth, freshness and fridge cold. Espresso was lacking any flavor outside of burned coffee. When we noted this to the waitress, she said our desert might have been accidentally burned, but tough life. Nothing was replaced, removed from the bill or offered. We paid full price for all. Sad.
