62 years of loyal customers can't be wrong. We are grateful to all of our customers, employees, and critics (...though we may not always agree!). The only way to find out the truth is with a visit. Oft imitated, never duplicated. Thank you in advance.

Why they're an Icon

From the OpenTable editors: Open since 1949, this legendary destination is the king of San Francisco steakhouses. From luxurious carved-to-order prime rib rolled out on carts to chefs spinning salads to extra-large martinis with sidecars, every meal in the restaurant’s old-school dining room decked with ruby-hued booths is rollicking and unforgettable.

House of Prime Rib is a unique experience. This is not the place to come for a leisurely, romantic meal; you come for slabs of roast beef with delicious accompaniments. The menu is simple - four sizes of roast beef cut, plus a kids portion and fish of the day (I have not yet met anyone who has ordered fish). The accompaniments are simple as well - tossed salad, a deflated Yorkshire pudding, baked or mashed potatoes, and creamed spinach or creamed corn. No appetizers, no other sides. Because everything has already been cooked, the food comes out very quickly (we've never been there for more than about an hour). Expect the salad to be served within about 10 minutes of sitting down, followed shortly after by the roast beef accompaniments and then the pièce de résistance: your delicious slab of roast beef, carved by your table and served with a flourish, swimming in au jus and accompanied by three types of horseradish spread. The food is all delicious, I've never had a complaint about what we've been served. While the prices may seem a bit high (the roast beef cuts ranged from about $60 to $70), it is not a bad value given the quantity and quality of the food. Nobody has ever left the House of Prime Rib complaining about being hungry. The atmosphere is very energetic; unless you are lucky enough to be tucked away in a corner in the restaurant's many dining rooms, you'll be surrounded by the movement of what seems like scores of staff who are always rushing from place to place. You'll definitely hear other diners enjoying their meals as you dig into yours. The wine list, both by the bottle and glass, is comprehensive and reasonably priced. Every time we go, we peruse the dessert list of approximately 10 items when offered and always end up with the same response: "I just can't." House of Prime Rib is not a place to attend regularly. Once a year is just about the right amount to enjoy this unique and delicious experience.

Still the best deal in all of San Francisc and BEYOND!! Combined with great mixology by head barkeep Shar and veteran William, our hard working server, it’s hard to beat the mouth watering, juicy cuts of prime rib, cut and served right out of those silver carts by a master chef. There really is no restaurant that even comes close to this historic and iconic institution…….really HoPR is Numero Uno in California!!

Food and experience was amazing. It was a bit rouser then we expected for the price of the food. Food was top notch though and service was very good.
