Le Yaca began in 1964 in Courchevel, a tiny, country village in the French Alps. Daniele Bourderau & Gerard decided it would be fun to open a small restaurant. When friends learned of their plans, they told the hopeful restaurateurs they were crazy to think people would drive eight kilometers on a winding, icy road for dinner. Daniele and Gerard hesitated for three months and then decided, “yaca le faire,” a contraction of the French phrase “il n’y a qu’a le faire,” which basically means, “let’s do it.” They called the restaurant Le Yaca as a gag, but the name caught on with customers who were amused by the pun and contributed to the restaurant’s lore by inventing “yaca-isms” of their own: yaca y aller (let’s go). Daniele came to the United States and opened Le Yaca in Williamsburg. Daniel Abid bought Le Yaca in 2001. Daniel worked and trained in such prestigious places as “Le Pre Catelan” and “Lenotre” in Paris; “L’Amandier” and “Roger Verge," and to top it all off, “Alain Ducass

Always wonderful! The beef tartare was perfection, and the fish of the day (rockfish with oysters and roasted vegetables) was excellent. The salad and sorbet trio are always delicious. Our server Axel recommended a Bordeaux that perfectly complimented our meals. Le Yaca is my go-to restaurant in Williamsburg!

Our dining experience to honor my recently deceased mother on her actual birthday tonight was truly extraordinary. Upon arriving at Mom’s favorite restaurant, our group of four was warmly welcomed and escorted to the very table she cherished. To our delight, each bound menu was customized with the message “Happy Birthday, Katie” and without prices (as Mom & Dad would do to encourage guests to indulge in their favorite dishes when my folks were treating). As the evening unfolded, the warmth and attentiveness of our waitress, Lizzie, only added to the ambiance. After our incredible charcuterie and meals (nothing was less than 5 stars) and just before dessert, she surprised us with one small champagne glass of house-made vanilla ice cream, adorned with a single sparkler. With heartfelt grace and dulcet voice, she serenaded us with, 'Happy Birthday to you,…To your memory, dear Katie, happy birthday to you,” This touching, solo tribute brought tears to our eyes, especially when it came time to eat our luscious desserts and raise a toast in her honor with our water glasses. The entire experience, from the exquisite local cuisine to the beautifully presented ice cream and sparkler and desserts, made it feel as though Mom was right there with us in spirit. To top it off, right before we left, the restaurant presented me with one of the special menus, unbound and carefully wrapped in a burgundy bow, like a treasured diploma. I wouldn't have changed a single moment of this wonderful evening that celebrated my mother's extraordinary life and her lasting impact on all of us. I loved to bring both of my parents here, and now that they are both gone, I get to share this marvelous experience with others as I did tonight. Pleasant aside: all three of my guests have vowed to return at their soonest convenience!
