This is where it all started – on the banks of the Rappahannock River overlooking where we grow our oysters. We like to call Merroir a “tasting room,” just so people know to expect something different. Everything is either served raw or cooked on an outdoor grill, small-plate-style, and beautifully paired with craft brews and world-famous wines. Each menu item is singularly-focused, seasonal, and ever-changing, so there’s always a surprise in store.

Le Yaca began in 1964 in Courchevel, a tiny, country village in the French Alps. Daniele Bourderau & Gerard decided it would be fun to open a small restaurant. When friends learned of their plans, they told the hopeful restaurateurs they were crazy to think people would drive eight kilometers on a winding, icy road for dinner. Daniele and Gerard hesitated for three months and then decided, “yaca le faire,” a contraction of the French phrase “il n’y a qu’a le faire,” which basically means, “let’s do it.” They called the restaurant Le Yaca as a gag, but the name caught on with customers who were amused by the pun and contributed to the restaurant’s lore by inventing “yaca-isms” of their own: yaca y aller (let’s go). Daniele came to the United States and opened Le Yaca in Williamsburg. Daniel Abid bought Le Yaca in 2001. Daniel worked and trained in such prestigious places as “Le Pre Catelan” and “Lenotre” in Paris; “L’Amandier” and “Roger Verge," and to top it all off, “Alain Ducass

Food, service and ambience are all top notch. Crab croquettes are excellent but on the smaller side so consider that if sharing. The choat (pork shanks) were amazing ; my family member stating that it was the best food he ever ate. Salmon was a hit also. Prime Rib was very good but I will order the choat next visit.

No one at the hostess station for our reservation. For a very long time. We went to front desk to ask for help. Reluctantly, this person came to station to tell me hostess is seating someone else. Which was not true as we had been standing there for about 7 minutes and never saw any customers or hostess. Desk woman inquired from bartender who had one customer and saw us standing there the whole time as to where hostess was. He didn't know where hostess was. She suggested he find out. Eventually, hostess showed up and helped the larger group of PEOPLE BEHIND US who had just arrived! I told her we had been standing there for ten minutes and the WE were next! Phone rang. She answered the phone and discussed a reservation with the person on the phone. We continued to wait! Eventually, she settled on reservation with phone call and seated us. NO APOLOGY or acknowledgement in any way.

We had a lovely Birthday Dinner on the 21st. Our weight person was terrific and attentive. Sadly we were the one and only customers for a six thirty seating. I know that Merrior is always crowded in the summer, but people need to know it is quiet and extremely enjoyable in the winter as well. We sat on the porch and it was warm and cozy.
