Judith is a new American tavern pairing warm hospitality and the cooking of James Beard Nominated Chef Julia Sullivan (Henrietta Red in Nashville) located in the quiet area of Sewanee, TN near the University of the South. The name is an homage to Judith Ward Lineback, the first woman to matriculate into the University in 1969.As Sullivan’s first solo project, Judith will feature a seasonal menu of creative and approachable dishes including a selection of small, shareable plates perfect for the bar crowd. The beverage program mirrors the food with accessible wines and a cocktail list created by Henrietta Red's Beverage Manager Patrick Halloran. The warehouse-style building, previously the Old Steam Laundry which serviced the University since the 1950’s, has additional space for private dining and parties. With the goal of becoming a meeting place for students, faculty, tourists and the Sewanee community alike, the restaurant will be open for dinner from Thursday - Monday.

Several years ago, I decided that my future in the restaurant business would most likely not remain in the realm of fine dining and gourmands, but would rather lean towards the style of restaurant that I found myself frequenting most often - places that provided consistency and quality at a price that was fair for the quality of the food and experience. Public House plays to the comforts of good, solid food, while applying the principles of premium food products to a more casual setting. You will find all the fish is delivered from Foley’s in Boston, high quality steaks and a rotating selection of vegetable sides that are true to the region and season. You’ll also find a really good hamburger and fish sandwich, along with fun snacks and small plates that pair well with cocktails, beer and wine. Welcome,Nathan Lindley

Phenomenal in every way. Service was kind, attentive and impeccable. Every course was mouthwatering.,from the fantastic warm sourdough loaf with chili/garlic oil, to the trout rillette to the steak and the sublime fresh trout dish. Wines and cocktails were terrific too. Julia Sullivan is a master chef with a heart and Sewannee is lucky to have the restaurant Judith there. A culinary treasure.

I think The Public House has not only wonderful food, but also the most well trained wait staff of all the restaurants in Chattanooga. It starts with Lou, the manager, who keeps the plates spinning so all runs smoothly. I was facing the kitchen last night and told my husband I was mesmerized observing the "gears" turn like a well run watch. It was like an orchestrated symphony ! Our waiter, John, was the best. He had waited on me once before and greeted me with a big smile and made me feel like I was back for dinner with family. John had the uncanny ability to appear at our table at just the right time. I think he must have had an extra eyeball in the back of his head because it was a busy evening and his tables were full. He didn't hover and our food and drink were both delivered quickly. Going back to my first comment; not only does The Public House have great food, but they have the BEST staff!! We're looking forward to our next visit:-)
