Market Place Tavern is the latest concept and restaurant for Market Hospitality Group (MHG). The Tavern which overlooks the Litchfield Green, is the oldest public building in town and one of the oldest penal facilities in the state. It was built in 1812 to serve as a jail for British prisoners during the War of 1812. A cell block and a three-story wing with additional cell blocks, which now is part of the restaurant’s bar area, was added in 1846. The jail closed in 1992 and was used as a treatment center for men serving prison sentences. It shut down again in 1993 and reopened in 1994 as a rehabilitation center for women facing incarceration. When that center closed, the state decided to sell it.The restaurant is open for lunch and dinner and features “American Tavern Food” with Craft Beers and Cocktails made with local spirits.     Food is always delicious. I'm not a sushi person, but the entrees and appetizers are fabulous. Unique but not weird combinations and flavors, and hearty servings. Very attentive wait staff. Beautiful ambiance with lovely chandaliers - love the lighting!

    My husband and I had a reservation and were seated right away on the bridge room, very nice. We were asked what kind of water we wanted for our table and told our server, Evelyn would be right over to take our order, which she did. She took our cocktail order and when they were served she took our dinner order. My husband had the foil gras mousse and I had the tapioca custard appetizer. For entrees he had the scallops and u had BBQ short rib. For dessert we shared the s’mores. Everything was excellent .
