About this restaurant

  • Charming
  • Good for special occasions
  • Neighbourhood gem
Open for over three decades, Le Cafe du Marche remains a family run, independent French restaurant. Tucked down a cobbled mews on the corner of historic Charterhouse Square and a stones throw from the Elizabeth Line & Farringdon Stations, we offer honest French food in a convivial and characterful setting. Crossing the threshold, guests feel they escape the hustle and bustle of the Square Mile and instead are transported to the south of France. We have live jazz in the evenings

Cafe du Marche is a very good restaurant, I’ve been many times and always been pleased. The food is excellent, good brasserie fare, well cooked, changes with the seasons and good proportions. Decent wine list that is reasonably priced.

A nice lunchtime atmosphere in the restaurant. The first course, crumpet, etc was ok. The lamb cutlets were underdone and so tough I couldn’t chew them. I got halfway through and discarded the chewed bits on the sides of my plate. The waiter took it back to the kitchen and the second offering was better but still tough. The dessert was alright but considering the price of the meal it was not value for money. I rarely complain but feel it is justified on this occasion.

The food (octopus and trout) was excellent and well served. However, on two occasions we had to call the server to place our order (first for the starter and main, and then for the dessert). Otherwise there was nothing to complain about, though I did feel surprised that the lunch menu is the same price as teh evening one. But that may be because it serves mainly city workers and fewer come in the evening.

A great French restaurant in the heart of Smithfield. The food, wine and service combination made for an excellent dinner.
