Updated October 21, 2021

The genesis of the beef-on-bun combo known as the hamburger might be forever shrouded in mystery — there are at least six different people that claim to be responsible for its invention — but regardless of who came up with the burger, its appeal is undeniable.

Throughout Philadelphia and New Jersey, burger options abound, from pared-down smashburgers topped with a simple combo of lettuce, tomato and onion, to patties finished with bacon and eggs designed for brunch-time enjoyment. Up and down the New Jersey coastline and into Philadelphia, these are the spots serving can’t-miss burgers.

About the restaurant

SouthGate’s fun take on Korean-American fusion makes for a menu full of creative pub fare such as twice-fried soy wings, crispy Brussels sprouts tossed in a kimchi vinaigrette, and fries topped with garlic and gochujang aioli. The spin on a burger is no exception — it begins with a bulgogi-marinated beef patty finished with sautéed kimchi, bacon, cheese, aromatic perilla leaves, and Kewpie mayo.

We thoroughly enjoyed our burger and spicy pork tacos. We usually have the fried chicken and/or the ramen, but decided to try something different. We weren’t disappointed.

About the restaurant

Celebrity chef Jose Garces’s recently revamped burger and cocktail bar has been putting out two of Philly’s favorite burgers since 2009. The Village Burger gained a fast following with a thick patty served with Thousand Island dressing on a house-made bun, and those looking for something a bit more decadent could upgrade to the Whiskey King, a serious burger that sees the addition of applewood-smoked bacon, Roth Moody blue cheese, maple bourbon cipollini onions, and seared foie gras. The newly updated menu includes turkey and beef smash burgers as well as a black bean and lentil veggie burger with guac and pickled cabbage.

We celebrated our anniversary and they were so welcoming and generous. We went on a Thursday evening at 5:30pm in time for the last 30 minutes of happy hour. It was warm and inviting and the drinks and food were wonderful.

Going strong for the past 23 years, the recipe for the park-facing restaurant’s namesake burger has remained unchanged — a juicy beef patty sandwiched into a soft brioche roll with lettuce, tomato, housemade pickles, Gruyere, and sweet caramelized onions.

Perfect spot for a late brunch, lively but not too noisy. Enjoyed the variety of dishes and everyone was pleased with their meals. Food was fresh and flavorful, and the bloody Mary's were killer!

One of the best meals I've had on the East Coast in a long time. Exceptional "unique" taste to every dish. Service was outstanding and seamless. Design of the interior complimenting the history Vail Manson was as delightful as the menu. I truly respect the Resturant requiring proof of all three vaccinations. Bravo. I just moved to the area and have found my new favorite. You will see us often! Clayton, Mendham

About the restaurant

Predictably, Princeton’s premier destination for new American fare doesn’t disappoint. Instead of the usual pancakes and eggs Benedict, Mistral thinks outside of the weekend daytime dining box with a menu that runs from croque madame and pan mee ramen, to a big-time brunch burger garnished with bacon jam, garlic aioli, and a runny fried egg.

We loved our meal and service! Our only complaint, and the only reason we don’t come more often, is that vegan options are not listed on the menu, we’d feel more welcome if we didn’t have to ask for vegan options! The cold soba noodles and yucca poutine (made vegan) were craveable.

My entree was a very small portion of polenta and shrimp, about 6 shrimp on a bed of polenta. Not sure why it was called shrimp and grits. Also the shrimp had the tails on so I had to pull them out of the sauce to eat them. The service was ok, the waitress takes your order and bus boys do everything else.
