From cobblestoned alleys to breathtaking harbor views, Boston’s best outdoor dining setups offer many scenic perks. The city once just had a handful of alfresco dining options, but times have changed in this cultural capital.

An iconic seafood restaurant serves gorgeous Atlantic Ocean views. In Cambridge, a farm-to-table spot heats up its outdoor tables with a giant stone fireplace—this is New England, after all. Candy-colored wall art and lush greenery add to the wow factor at a popular izakaya.

The food at these restaurants is as inviting as the backdrop, including, of course, a few places specializing in every local’s warm-weather favorite: the lobster roll. Read on for a guide to 12 Boston restaurants that ace outdoor dining.

Porto’s outdoor seating is some of Boston’s best thanks to its size and design. String lights, throw rugs, couches, and pretty craft cocktails make the patio a prime spot to take in Back Bay’s skyscrapers. James Beard Award-winning chef Jody Adams focuses on Mediterranean food with dishes like a decadent seafood tower, grilled lamb chops with salsa verde, and scallops a la plancha.

A lovely place for a wintry dinner. We all commented on how different the space looked from the photos online, which show a bright, well-lit venue. However our early dinner last night was so cozy with candlelight. Regarding the food, the menu is small and allergy-friendly (especially for diners with celiac), and our steaks, salad and gnocca fritto were perfectly prepared. The service is attentive, friendly and professional, and the cocktails truly delightful, creative yet simple. A wonderful evening!

First, my online reservation request for a window table for my guests from New Mexico and Ohio was honored - and they loved it. Our waiter James was a delightful host, and we had a happy lunch. Your maître d' team was most congenial on arrival and departure- thanks! And even your valet parker Mr Saint was cordial. Thanks!

As always, dinner at Harvest was a pleasure. The food is always good, but the scallop entree was particularly delicious. Servers are always very good, but our server last night was particularly careful and attentive in helping my wife find a meal that was compatible with her Celiac disease.

what a lovely restaurant. Beautiful decor and branding with the littlest but perfect touches. They had an extensive wine and cocktail menu. The wine that Sarah got was lovely. The two cocktails that I got were fabulous. started with the strait of Messina Which was a calabrian chili-infused tequila, prickly pear, lemon. perfect balance of spicy, but sweet yet still refreshing. The next drink I got was the improved spritz. This I think was an aperol spritz with olive juice. It was great. It had a perfect mind of the salty olive brine and the sweet aperol. I’ve had something like this once before, and I am a fan. This came in a tall rocks glass, which isn’t very cute, but at least it wasn’t a coupe glass. The focaccia was so mid. i was not a fan of this. the bottom was sooooo hard, and the bread itself was not light a fluffy. kinda dense and not enough salt in my opinion. It had rosemary on top, but the rest of the bread besides the top was very bland tasting. The next dish we had was the shaved Brussel sprout salad with roasted hazelnuts, pickled red onion, dried cranberries, and a Caesar vinaigrette dressing. This was yummy. It reminded me of a chopped salad the way that everything was very small and you could get every ingredient in the salad in one bite. then for mains, we both got the Bolognese tagliolini. This was a fabulous Bolognese sauce. You could tell that it had been cooking for a while. The spices were complex and it had a note of sweetness, which was surprisingly nice. The noodles were not al dente, but still very good. they were the Perfect size for me, as I don’t like a thick noodle. This was probably top 10 Bolognese that I’ve had in Boston for sure. we finished the night with a tiramisu. This is a delightful tiramisu. It was chocolate heavy without being overwhelming. All of the components were very well done and not one overshadowed anything else.

We had a great experience at Alcove for dinner. There were two of us and we shared the chips w/onion dip, the whole chicken with polenta and mushrooms and the bibb salad. The food was fantastic and plenty for the two of us. The service was friendly and attentive. I've been there a few times now and it's been excellent every time.

About the restaurant

This neighborhood star offers outdoor dining areas all-year-round. One of its patios is covered and heated, meaning you don’t have to worry about bringing a jacket. The other is tucked to the side and feels more intimate with some greenery for shade. Branch Line is known for a rotisserie and wood-fired grill that churns out juicy roasted chicken, plus a long list of craft beer from breweries all over the country, but the menu changes regularly, so you’ll have to keep going back.
