Surrey
About the restaurant
The Old Surrey Restaurant is Surrey’s best well- kept secret. Built in 1918, it was the residence of Lou Jack and his household until it was converted into a restaurant in 1974.

The interior has a crisp, clean aesthetic that is enhanced by hardwood floors and the enlarged photos of historic Surrey that adorn the walls. There are five distinct dining areas on the top floor (including a cozy library) and a banquet facility downstairs. The cuisine is French with a splash of West Coast flare. A treat for new and seasoned guests alike are the signature dishes that are prepared and flambeed tableside.

The restaurant has been family-owned and operated since 1974 and in 1984 the restaurant has entered into a partnership with the family farm in Ryder Lake overlooking Chilliwack from the nearby mountains. The Old Surrey is well known for its free-range lamb and veal allowing customers to enjoy fresh organic ingredients.

This is one of my favorite restaurants in Gastown, so I looked forward to showing my SIL this place. As my SIL was still recovering from a bout of diverticulitis, I didn’t order a bottle of wine. I had two wines by the glass, and we shared a few dishes. We started with their fabulous bread service, then a Dungeness Crab salad, an Artichoke tart and their Terrine of Fois Gras. Our “main” was their Agnolotti. I had a glass of 2022 Garnier et Fils Chablis with the salads and a glass of 2016 Synchromesh Pinot Noir from Storm Haven Vineyard in Okanagan Falls, BC with foie gras and agnolotti. The Artichoke Tart was half salad, half egg custard tart with pieces of artichoke between the two. It was a light, refreshing dish. The Dungeness Crab Salad was a visual surprise … the crab was placed between thin slices of radish and decorated with green leaves. It was interesting; perhaps a little too subtle in flavor for me. The foie gras terrine came with two thick pieces of brioche. The square of terrine was decorated with squares of wine jelly, and cherry halves. The terrine was soft and silky and the brioche so buttery. The star of the evening was the Sweet Corn Agnolotti. Pillows of mascarpone pasta were covered with pieces of sweet corn and a generous helping of sliced black truffle. This dish was “to die for” and I wanted to order a second plate. I love the food at L’Abattoir and dine here every time I come to Vancouver.

About the restaurant
LOCALLY MINDED. RESPONSIBLY RAISED. MICHELIN RECOMMENDED.

Housed in two of Vancouver’s most iconic buildings, Homer St Cafe and Bar is a contemporary restaurant set in the base of the historic Homer Building and the Beasley building in Vancouver’s Yaletown district.
Classic comfort cooking takes center stage thanks to a fire engine red rotisserie that roasts all manner of proteins. It’s chicken that’s the star here: served in quarter, half or whole portions, accompanied by classic sides basted in jus.
A decidedly adventurous wine and cocktail list rounds out the menu. The restaurant features two spaces that consist of an open concept kitchen “Chef’s Bar” where one can get up close and personal with the culinary team, a semi private dining room with reclaimed factory windows, and bespoke seating complemented by antique tiling.

What a lovely atmosphere for our ladies night. The decor are trendy and stylish, setting the perfect tone for an unforgettable meal. Right from the start, we were greeted with attentive service—before leading us to our table, they offered to check our coats that elevated the entrance experience. The food was great, well seasoned, and very tasty. The wine & cocktail list had so many lovely selections The table started with two dozen oysters that were fresh and appetizing. Our entrées were served in a timely fashion A few of the ladies enjoyed the fillet mignon, which was broiled to perfection. We cannot say enough about the mashed potatoes. Delicious! A couple of the ladies had the braised beef, short ribs very flavourful and moist. Our vegetarian friend had some lovely options to choose from and went with the Cauliflower steak, which she thoroughly enjoyed. And last, but not least another favourite at the table was the crab stuffed ravioli. That sauce is truly amazing. Although we were stuffed, we could not resist ordering a few of the desserts to share. The chocolate peanut butter marquis bar & panda cotta were the favourites of the night. Our server Aaron was easy to talk to, provided excellent recommendations, and truly made us feel welcome. The entire experience—from the service to the incredible flavors—was flawless. We look forward to dining at the Steveston Seafood House again
