Amazing Italian! Excellent food and great service. Booked for a saturday afternoon girls lunch and it was the perfect choice. Menu had lots of choice and food was excellent. Staff were attentive without being overbearing. Restaurant was busy but the sound of chatter from tables around us only added to the ambience. Will definitley be back!

Love this restaurant and always visit when we are at the theatre as it is across the road. Staff are so friendly and professional and food is amazing. The bruschetta is beautiful as is the carbonara and pizzas. We are never rushed and get to enjoy our dining experience

We booked a table for 7:30pm on a Friday evening. When we arrived a little early there was a queue of people stood all down the staircase. It transpired that we all had 7:30pm bookings. We waited until after 8pm before being brought in from the freezing temperatures outside for our table with no apology for our wait. The food was good, however, for an Italian restaurant not to serve Pinot Grigio by the glass is most unusual! I don’t think we’ll be back, just for the way we were all made to stand outside, I thought this was really poor.

We had a lovely meal. The staff are very attentive and remember small details from previous visits which is quite impressive as we're not there every week and they must serve many diners. We always have the lunch menu which offers several choices.

Couldn’t have loved this place more! The extensive menu was great value for money. Although busy, the staff were kind and efficient and friendly. Authentic Italian food. The pizza was amazing and they made me a special cooked salmon pasta as the one on the menu was with smoked salmon which I don’t like. They couldn’t have been more accommodating. They also do small portions of pasta for people with a smaller appetite or for lunch. The wine was delicious and the real vanilla ice cream was a must have. I want to give it 6 or 7 stars. So so good. We will definitely be back. ❤️

Staff were 10/10 they were very good, couple complaints, we chose a window seat but didn’t realise how tight it was when other people turned up, every few minutes I was being nudged by wait staff getting to other tables, not their fault of course but should remove 1 table and it would solve it. The food was unfortunately very poor, I had the lasanga and my fiancee had the bolognese and we both struggled to finish it I’ve had better microwaved versions. The limonata was also not very good. The tiramisu was decent, nothing special but no complaints. I wouldn’t return unfortunately

FAQs

Warm, authentic and lively, think family-run Italian hospitality with Tuscan-style décor. Guests often describe a buzzing, friendly atmosphere with attentive staff and an upbeat vibe ideal for casual dates, pre-theatre meals and family gatherings. It can be noisy when full, which many guests enjoy as part of the lively Italian feel, though those wanting a quiet meal should consider earlier or quieter times.

Yes, Mamma Roma is a lovely pick for a date night. Guests praise the warm, authentic Italian atmosphere, friendly attentive service and window tables, and many mention coming here for special evenings like Valentine’s. The cosy, Tuscan-farmhouse decor and an extensive wine and cocktail list make it feel intimate, though it can be lively on busy nights so an early booking or a window table helps for a quieter experience.

Yes, Mamma Roma has a full drinks list. Expect a wide selection of wines (including Barolo, Chianti and Prosecco), cocktails (Raspberry Mojito, Espresso Martini), spirits, beers and Italian liqueurs. Guests frequently praise the wine list and cocktails as part of the dining experience.

Visit for an early pre-theatre meal or at lunchtime on non-show days for a slightly quieter experience. The restaurant gets very busy on Playhouse show nights and weekend evenings, so an early seating or midweek visit is best if you prefer a calmer meal. Wherever possible, book ahead, guests often recommend reserving.

Yes, the menus include daily specials and rotating dessert choices (the Dessert Menu lists 'Mamma’s Choice' and the Pre-Theatre Menu includes 'Pesce del Giorno' and 'Zuppa del Giorno'), so some offerings change regularly. Guests note fresh, daily-prepared dishes and seasonal specials.

The consensus from guests points to pizza and fresh pasta as standouts, particularly seafood pasta, carbonara and various pizzas. Desserts such as tiramisù and the Baileys-topped Coppa are also frequently praised. If you love classic, freshly made Italian dishes, the pizza and seafood/pasta options are safe bets.

Yes, staff are known to be accommodating. Guests frequently report successful special requests like birthday cakes, celebratory arrangements and seating preferences. For celebrations or accessibility needs, call ahead and mention any requests so the team can prepare and ensure a smoother arrival.

Yes, families dine here often and guests bring children for birthdays and family meals. There’s a dedicated Kids Menu with mains, starters and desserts, and staff are used to serving families. If you’re visiting with young children, an earlier booking or quieter seating can make the visit more relaxed.

Yes, Mamma Roma runs a well-regarded Pre-Theatre Set Menu (good value for a fixed-price meal), a lunch menu with deals, and daily/chef’s dessert specials. Guests also describe the team arranging birthday cakes and celebratory touches, so special-occasion experiences are available if you call ahead.

Midweek (Tuesday–Thursday) or a non-show lunchtime is ideal for a quieter experience, while Friday/Saturday evenings and Playhouse performance nights offer a livelier atmosphere. If you want value, the pre-theatre menu on show nights is popular, just expect a bustling dining room and book ahead.

Portions are generally generous and good value, pizzas and pasta are described as plentiful and satisfying, and guests often comment on hearty, fresh dishes. The restaurant also offers half portions for smaller appetites. A few guests noted inconsistencies (some steaks or a lasagne felt small) but overall most guests find the portions generous and well priced for central Edinburgh.

Smart casual. The restaurant’s owner information lists smart casual as the dress code, and guests typically dine in smart but relaxed attire, suitable for pre-theatre plans or a nice evening out in Edinburgh.
