Discover Tuindorp Oostzaan
Originally one of the “garden villages”, it was developed around 1919 between the two World Wars as a way to spruce up the city. Today, it’s home to many elderly couples and families with children, as well as a whole new influx of cafes and restaurants—the neighborhood has more than 10,000 inhabitants. Some of the highlights include freshly baked goods from local bakeries, funky Indonesian cuisine, and surprisingly solid BBQ, to name a few. When you’re in the area, be sure to check out the nearby NDSM: on the northern bank of the IJ grows a self-made city with hundreds of artists, creative pop-ups, unconventional homes, innovative culture, eclectic cafes, and groundbreaking events—on land and water.
