Morcilla is my favorite restaurant in Pittsburgh because the food is always delicious. I always have the octopus, which has never been disappointing. This time, I tried the gildas, which blended wild anchovies with olives. Really tasty. I had the beef tatar, which everyone In our group thought was one of the best they have had. Lynn's gin and tonic could turn a McDonald's hamburger into a gourmet meal. Like all restaurants these days, the sound level is on the high side, and the ambiance is more like a busy European bistro. The service is attentive, and the dishes come out as they are ready, so nothing has been sitting, waiting to be picked up.

My wife and I decided to celebrate her birthday at Eleven. We were not disappointed. Everything was wonderful! We started early with $9 cocktails at the bar. We had Martinis with Plymouth Gin for only $9. They were great! Then we got $9 glasses of wine to take to our table. We ordered oysters to start, and they tasted so fresh, sweet & briny. My wife had the pork chop and I had the radiatori. They were both delicious. Finally, we had the Trio of Ice Creams with very rich & creamy vanilla bean, lavender honey, & maple brown walnut butter. They were all so good. Nick, our server was excellent too. He never rushed us, but he seemed to be always there to ask if everything was OK and if we needed anything.

The pasta dishes were superb, as was the salad with lump crab meat and avocado. The panini, however, was disappointing. The bread was two slabs of thick, Texas-style bread, and the filling was very thick. Along with the Italian meats and cheese, there was shredded lettuce. If it was cooked on a Panini Press, the chef/cook forgot to close and press it. Obviously, whoever made the Panini has never been to Italy.

Discover Lawrenceville

Pittsburgh’s most iconic foods are also its heartiest. After all, the city has had to feed famished steelworkers and 300-pound Pittsburgh Steelers. It’s not uncommon to find french fries on everything from sandwiches to green salads, so it’s a good thing that nearby Heinz produces 650 million bottles of ketchup every year. The famous Pittsburgh rare steak was the advent of pre-microwave era steel workers who had 30 minutes for lunch. Who doesn’t miss the days of charring raw steaks on hot blast furnaces? Former Pittsburghers have dreams about spicy chipped chopped ham, a local staple since 1933. A pierogi is a sort of Polish take on a pot sticker, and upscale chefs do all kinds of creative things with them. Save room for burnt pecan torte, Lawrenceville's favorite cake.
