REX at The Royal provides guests with transformed southern fare, a full bar, daytime cafe and curated bottle-shop housed in the historical Royal Theatre, known as a staple in the rich cultural history of the City of Philadelphia for its role as a hub for Black culture and artistry, including film-making and live music, during the 20th century. REX at The Royal, now operating out of the newly-renovated theatre, maintains key tenets of the historical site including a stage for live music performances, as well as sweeping arches and other details sustained from the original design. REX at The Royal cuisine pays homage to the great early 20th-century African-American chefs who adapted traditional southern fare to Philadelphia’s urban landscape. The concept’s foundation lies in the Lowcountry cuisine of the Southeast Atlantic coast, influenced as it was by the grains and traditions of the African diaspora melded with the local agriculture and fisheries.

Vibe check! The food was solid—nothing mind-blowing, but definitely enjoyable. They had a set menu for Valentine’s Day, which worked out fine. Portions were generous, and the restaurant itself had a lovely ambiance. Our waiter, Clint, was friendly and knowledgeable about the menu. The presentation of the dishes could’ve been a bit more refined, but overall, it was a nice Italian spot in the heart of downtown. Parking was manageable—found street parking, and there’s a lot on the corner. Bonus: it’s BYOB with no corkage fee! The restaurant has two floors, and the upstairs section has a slightly more charming vibe. While it’s not a place I’d rush back to, it’s definitely worth trying at least once. 4/5.

Abby, (Management) and Jasmine (my fabulous, friendly Waitress with) et al..I can't say enough about their courtesy, constant attentiveness the ambiance, the gastronomical pleasure, the fact that me, myself and I were overwhelmed with the feeling of plenty of self-love. It did not matter that my date could not make it on this particular socially interpreted holiday. It was a night that melted my heart in so many wonderful ways. I am sharing this experience with everyone I know and whomever I meet. A perfect place to enjoy for all of your plans. I am looking forward to the "CHEERS" feeling again and again. This was no coincidence. Enjoy!

Adorable place with every whiskey you could imagine. The staff was friendly and the food very yummy. My son said the tater tot appetizer was the best he’s ever had. I do wish the whisky tasting flight was a little heavier a pour
