Abyssinia Restaurant is here in downtown Calgary to serve you delectable food from the unique and ancient traditional cuisine of Ethiopia and Eritrea. We hope you will find this a truly exciting dining experience while breaking some injera and eating from the same plate with friends and family. Ethiopian food is best known for the spongy sourdough flatbread called Injera, which serves as the ‘spoon’ for lentil, bean, meat, and vegetable dishes served with it. Ethiopian dishes are characterized by the unique variety and combination of spices used to give them their exotic taste. Vegan dishes are also a staple of Ethiopian cuisine, especially during lent and other fasting seasons when most of the Coptic Orthodox Christians temporarily become vegans. Ethiopian cuisine is a delightful experience. Featuring both vegan and meat entrées, it gives you a choice of good nutrition while enjoying its delicate and exotic seasonings.

None of the two beers on tap were available and out of the three domestic beers, only one was available (they ran out the day before). Whereas the appetizer (stuffed jalapeno pepper) was very good, the lamb stew was mainly bone and meat very chewy (probably mutton, but not tender lamb). Sauce was very good. The tartare was well prepared, but seemed to have bone fragments in it that also went through the grinder. Overall not a very good experience.

If you're looking for tasty and flavourful Ethiopian food then Abyssinia is a good spot. Try any of the stews. Ask for direction on the tibs - twice now I was sure I ordered tibs wanting a dry meat dish and got a stew - so ask for their help in that department. Skip the ginger tea - could barely taste the ginger. Service is great with attentive staff. It's a beautiful ambiance with a quite crowd and good background music. If you're not an injera bread fan - sadly, they don't serve rice anymore - so you'll have to do without.

The lady cooking came and talked to us and described items on the menu and then served us and explained all of the food and a little about Ethiopian culture. We really appreciated that personal touch! Thanks for the nice supper

The food was so delicious we scarfed it down in no time without realizing it. Eating with our hands and without utensils didn’t get in the way of our speed either.

We were a party of three with one vegetarian and one who has a low tolerance for very spicy food. The server offered very good vegetarian options, including the vegetarian platter which has a variety of samplers of different dishes. Some of the samplers were truely mild. However, there might be some differences in the perception of what constitutes mild or spicy between our party and the server as about half of that dish is made with a spice level that's beyond mild to us. That said the flavours of the food, the portions and the overall presentation were all wonderfull. The injira was fresh and moist and the lentil dish soft and thick. Service, however, was a different story. The server was very inattentive, had to be approached physically to pay attention to us, had to be specifically asked for refill of water time and time again and took her time even with a simple request for another extra spoon. It is a great place to experience Ethiopian food. However, make sure you have lots of time as it takes long to go through a meal at this place.

Service was not great. My wine glass was chipped. They dont have or ran out of ice cubes. The owner/ server was short of staff. The food took a long time to come. Other then that all good.
