About this restaurant

  • Charming
  • Good for special occasions
  • Romantic
Across from Millennium park and along Chicago’s Cultural Mile, Acanto Restaurant + Wine Bar is a treasured destination for those who appreciate authentic and approachable Italian food in a conversation-friendly atmosphere. Acanto serves seasonally-driven Italian cuisine from both regions of Italy utilizing artisanal ingredients from Midwest farmers and producers. Acanto boasts one of the most lauded wine programs in the US, including a 3-star rating by World of Fine Wine and a two-glass “Best of Excellence” rating by Wine Spectator. The libations menu is rounded out by Italian classics including spritzes and negronis along with craft cocktails, beer, and spirits.

The word Acanto is the Italian translation of Acanthus, the flowery leaf featured prominently in Roman architecture. Famed architect Louis Sullivan used Acanthus in his distinctive terra cotta ornamentation found on the facade of the historically-landmarked building that houses Acanto.

Frequent acanto several times per year …usually before show, concert, symphony or other event. Always top notch and great value in this era of ridiculous restaurant pricing .. !

I had been meaning to visit Acanto for a while, but I always thought they opened at 4 PM—likely because my first attempt to dine there was on a Saturday when I was told that. This time, with my best friend in town, I finally made a reservation, and I’m so glad I did. The restaurant is elegant, cozy, and sets the perfect mood for an unforgettable dining experience. We started with the arancini and brioche, both absolutely amazing. For my main dish, I had the branzino, which was just buttery, delicious perfection. My best friend opted for the short rib pasta—good, but it could have used just a hint of salt and pepper to elevate the flavors even more. Our server, Gavin, was delightful—his thoughtful recommendations truly enhanced our meal. But what really sealed the deal was Thomas, the manager, who went above and beyond by surprising us with a complimentary dessert—a rich, vibrant, and decadent creation reminiscent of tiramisu, featuring chocolate ladyfingers. From start to finish, the entire experience was nothing short of exceptional. Acanto has officially won me over, and now they might need to lock the doors to keep me out! Thank you for a wonderful evening—I can’t wait to return!
