Paying homage to Oakland history-about 100 years ago there was a lounge and club called the VARSITY LOUNGE located in our same location, who knew! In digging up old Oakland memorabilia, we found an old menu. To our surprise-they were well known for two things the Varsity Martini and Conga Lines!! While we aren’t ready for a conga, we are ready for the Varsity Martini and other drink specials. Come join us every day in our downstairs café, and our upstairs bar Monday through Saturday.

We were warned ahead of time that our server was backed up. We saw her once, when she came about 15 minutes after we'd been seated. We were ready with our order. The wine was opened and poured, the wine bucket was brought to the table but our wine sat on the common server table, not chilled, and we had to ask the water person when we needed a top off. We never received water refills. Thr food was not coursed, all the dishes came at the same time (apps, soup, salad, main). Nobody checked on us. It became less busy during the lunch service. We may have ordered dessert and coffee, but were never asked. I had to walk up to our server to ask for the check. Food was good as usual, we've been many times for dinner. We were extremely disappointed with our experience today.

I probably should admit that I was very reminiscent of the old Oliveto’s restaurant that occupied the space decades ago . The ambience was still there. It’s a beautiful space to dine, but the service level was lacking to nonexistent. A Noon reservation for lunch, there may have been only two tables set before us, and when the host warned us that the service might be slow that was an understatement. Server was barely present and by the time the upstairs dining room was 3/4 full the pace of taking orders, providing drinks, getting appetizers ahead of main courses. It was completely backwards and abysmal. In any other restaurant, a manager or Maitre D would’ve been present to pick up the slack and even offer something complimentary to make up for the poor service but unfortunately, none of that happened. Everyone just seemed completely absent and it turned into a 2+ hour lunch that should’ve taken half that time. Embarrassing as we were hosting some key clients and to have to keep turning around, trying to find a server to get service and even to get the check was like pulling teeth.. unfortunately because the food was simply average because of such poor service, I don’t think I would ever go back.

Billed as a Mediterranean restaurant, I wasn’t expecting it to be full on Italian. That said, the food was excellent. We ate in the downstairs area which was a bit loud, but not terribly so. Again, the food was outstanding. I had amatriciana, braised greens and Caesar.

We came for brunch on a Sunday and had reservations. We were seated upstairs next to the window overlooking College. It’s a nice space with interesting art work. We must have waited 30 minutes before the waiter showed up to take our order. It took another 20 - 30 minutes to get our mimosas (very ordinary) and another 20-30 to get our food. We ordered the croque madame, the smoked pastrami sandwich and the smoked salmon Benedict - all were delicious!!! It was another 20 minutes at least to get the bill and only because we walked over to get it. I don’t know if they were short staffed or what…. Will try again and hope service is better.

We had an rsvp for 3 for Sunday brunch and had to wait for quite a bit to be seated. The service was slow and we had to ask repeatedly for items. The food was ok - nothing major to complain about other than underwhelming (we ordered: egg Benedict, chilequiles, champagne omelette) and a little bland. The atmosphere is nice but some dusting would be appreciated. All the staff were friendly and great but it seemed they were understaffed. Overall, if they amped things up just 10 percent (excluding the prices) they have the potential for a great brunch place.

The food was good enough. Great cocktails. Staff was somewhat aloof, which made it a little less enjoyable. I was a server for many years. I understand and appreciate that it's hard work, and that when a diner is treated warmly, it can make the entire experience wonderful.

Beautiful setting, lovely service, a little pricey, but the deal breaker is that the food is rather over seasoned. We shared 5 dishes and every one was conspicuously too salty. Not ok.
