"Amberley Castle has a long held reputation for delivering outstanding cuisine.

Enjoyed on the first floor of the castle in either the magnificent Queen's Room, with its barrel-vaulted ceiling dating back to the 12th century and open fire or The Great Room, built-in 1165 by Bishop Luffa of Chichester, a fine example of Norman architecture with its high lancet windows, open fireplace, oak flooring, tapestry and suits of armour.

The dress code for the dining room is smart casual.

Please note that we welcome children of all ages to dine in the restaurant as long as their parents are well-behaved!

Afternoon tea in one of the lounges. All the sandwiches and cakes were delicious, well presented on the cake stand, and served by the excellent staff.

Amberly Castle is a magical location and the upstairs dining room is very majestic and grand, and quiet, we had a lovely evening with very welcoming attentive staff, and a delicious 6 course meal, all of which was excellent

The 5 course taster dinner menu was the only one offered whereas we subsequently learned there was an alternative “pantry” menu which may have been more suitable for people with a smaller appetite That said, the food/cooking was excellent .

We were greeted swiftly and with a friendly smile. The ambience was warm and cosy. Service to the table was good. Not a fan of the crockery as was more pottery and rather noisy when making contact with the cutlery. I had seen a sample menu online and was disappointed to learn that we were having a tasting menu instead. Felt a little hijacked as this wasn't our intention. While the food was beautifully created, the portions were very small and we did end up eating the whole loaf of bread just to fill ourselves up. We felt the meal overall was lacking vegetables. Previous restaurants with tasting menus we had found were interspersed with amuse-bouche so I was surprised this was not the case here. The cheese board was super. The wine list was clever being on an iPad and easy to navigate - very clever idea. Back in the lounge, the fire was lit and there were a tidy selection of games to help ourselves to.

This is the second time we have had afternoon tea at Amberley Castle and the first time time was very enjoyable in the main restaurant which is why we booked again. Unfortunately this time we were very disappointed, it was a special occasion which did not live up to expectations.

This was a mixed experience! The service and interior of the restaurant do not meet the expectation promised by the exterior of the castle. It was far less posh than expected, but not in the comfy country way that hoteliers like Olga Polizzi manage. It was all a bit worn out. Things that could be improved are: better trained serving staff and nicer cutlery and glassware. E.g. My husband excused himself before the meal had started and had to go all the way downstairs to the gents. The waiter arrived with the starters and I asked if it could be covered to keep it warm (as was my husband was obviously absent) - the waiter said in a loud voice ‘well how long is he going to be then?’ Hilarious! The main course was served incorrectly, with our two friends waiting to start theirs while they tried to locate our dishes - the same waiter came back and said ‘there has been a real mix-up here.’ We think the two original meals were meant for another table. That said the food was very good, with nice seasonal touches of venison and apple and blackberry. The wine list is electronic and rather gimmicky- easier to choose when they switched it to display an actual list. This was for a special celebration but it didn’t feel that special - we will not return!
