I wish we had skipped ARCA. After reading so many glowing reviews, we were excited to dine here, but it turned out to be the worst dining experience we’ve had in Mexico. We started with cocktails—mine was the gooseberry sour, which listed pisco as the base. I’ve enjoyed pisco sours before, but this one tasted like straight liquor with no balance or sweetness. My husband’s piña colada was similarly overpowering with alcohol. When the waiter checked in, I mentioned my drink was unpleasant, and to his credit, he had the bar adjust it with pineapple juice to make it more palatable. For food, we carefully chose dishes that did not contain insects, as that’s something I personally avoid. The soft-shell crab taco—wrapped in a leaf instead of a tortilla—came highly recommended in reviews but was underwhelming. The prawns with coconut roti were tasty, and the bone marrow was excellent—rich and flavorful. Up until this point, while not the best meal we’d had in Tulum, it wasn’t terrible either. Then everything fell apart. We ordered the Wagyu tostada as our final dish. Nowhere on the menu did it mention insects, so imagine my horror when I took a bite and a cricket fell onto my plate. Insects are my biggest fear, and realizing I had unknowingly just eaten one was deeply upsetting. It felt deceptive, as if they were deliberately hidden rather than listed as an ingredient. I couldn’t eat any further, and while my husband (who has eaten plenty of bugs during his time in the army) finished my portion, the experience was already ruined. We are not the type to complain, so despite how awful this was, we simply paid and left. Adding insult to injury, this was also the most expensive meal of our trip—more than Casa Banana, La Zebra, and other highly recommended restaurants in Tulum, all of which we thoroughly enjoyed. For us, ARCA was a complete disappointment, and I wouldn’t return.

From the time we arrived, Arca was a constant stream of fantastic service, food and vibe. The atmosphere is welcoming and calm; you hear the call & response of Chef / the kitchen every now and then - broken up with a plume of smoke from whatever’s being cooked - which comes off as a heartbeat to let diners know this place is alive and passionately running. Our meal (2 diners) in order of my favorites. Note, everything was worth eating, this is my preference and would not NOT recommend any of these. 1. ROASTED PRAWNS: Unctuous broth with fresh, brilliant, prawns. This was a lux dish without feeling overwhelming. Amazing. 2. SCALLOP CRUDO: A stunning presentation; diced scallops sitting with juices that boasted both a citrus and vegetal element. Bright and beautiful. The tostadas were an incredible delivery mechanism as well. 3. MEXICAN WAGYU TLAYUDA: The smoked yuca purée & huilacoche mole married the steak and tlayuda; a perfect few bites. Cooked perfectly and seasoned incredibly well. Magical. 4. STRIPED SEABASS: So flavorful; the green mole had a depth and weight to it that balanced the coconut / jicama slaw; making the fish stand out and ebb & flow between a light bite and powerful flavor punch. Perfectly crispy skin, delicate underneath, just as it should be. 5. BONE MARROW: What a unique preparation; the char on top was in this blanket of suite, slightly spicy, rich and delicious glacé. I love tamarind and it really came through. The marrow itself was buttery and had a smooth consistent texture (hard to do) - atop the grilled bread with some salt, it was a great way to finish the meal. ** Don’t sleep on the COCONUT FLOUR TORTILLAS! These were amazing + perfect for sopping up every sauce. They brought us GOAT CHEESE ICE CREAM for dessert - it had a tropical fruit compote, of sorts, buried underneath; a sweet/savory cracker on top dusted with cocoa and other seasoning. Delicious. 2 Arca Coladas to drink, and there you have it. A perfect meal.
