Leisurely cafe by day, Bastia transforms to a Mediterranean restaurant by night and draws culinary inspiration from the sun-drenched islands of Corsica and Sardinia

Why they're an Icon

Executive chef: Tyler Akin

From the OpenTable editors: Acclaimed chef Tyler Akin is back with Bastia, his stylish Mediterranean restaurant inside Fishtown’s Anna & Bel hotel. Snag a seat at one of the green marble bar tops or at a cozy table by the fireplace to dig into seafood-forward dishes like sea urchin butter tartine paired with playful cocktails and riffs on classic aperitivi. Either way, the all-day cafe is made for lingering, just like his beloved and now-shuttered Res Ispa was.

I used to be an habitue to Fishtown 50 years ago and there have been considerable changes since then. Bastia is located in the Anna & Bell Hotel which itself is beautifully decorated. Bastia is named after a town in Northern Corsica and is mainly Corsican cuisine perhaps with some Sardinian influences. It has an incredible wine and alcohol list with obscure wines from all over the Mediterranean (there is one wine from Maryland). There is an extensive list of Italian liquors and digestifs. Our waiter was excellent and very knowledgeable about the wine and food. His recommendations were spot on. The menu has a lot of terms that may seems strange but these are mostly alternative names for fish and pasta. I had the mallordeus which is similar to gnocchi with what some describe as a Bolognese sauce. The seasoning in this sauce is very different and nicely spicy. This dish goes with a hearty red wine. A friend had osso bucco which was amazingly tender. The other people in my party had the orata fka dorade. This is a fish probably best not covered up by strong sauces and the flavor of the fish did come through. We went early on a weekday and the place was quiet enough to carry on a conversation even though it filled up a little before we left. This is a major plus considering all the noise currently in Philly restaurants especially if you want to "dine" and not just eat. Our server said it can get more active on weekends and the bar is very large. The tables have plenty of space between them. The restaurant says it's business casual but most people were casual casual. The restaurant has a cosmopolitan feel somewhat unusual for Philly. Prices for the food are reasonable considering the quality. Wine prices, especially by the bottle, are high but that may be due to the rarity of the selection. You can apparently order a bottle and they are able to seal up what you don't finish and you can take it home. All in all an excellent addition to the Philly restaurant scene.

We celebrated my daughter’s birthday at lunch which features an outstanding and very interesting healthy menu. The hotel holds great memories for us since my Mother-in-law lived at the former Penn Widows home for five years. Situated in Fishtown near my husband’s former home, we were thrilled to see the brilliant restoration of this historic site. I only wish my in laws were alive to see how the Anna Bel restaurant / hotel is so welcoming. Great job!

We went to Bastia for brunch on Saturday. It was one of the best experiences we ever had at brunch. Three of us enjoyed the pre fixe brunch experience with so many tastings of many different dishes, and all were so delicious. Can't wait to go back!

Food and drinks were amazing. It was really loud but I guess it because it was labeled one of the best, and for good reason!

I had Shawn as my server and he was nothing short of phenomenal. The food was outstanding and it felt like we stumbled upon something special. I can't wait to return. Make sure you order the Skate Cheeks.

Ambiance felt like a cozy, chic family dinner by the fire. Cocktails were excellent, the milk punch with the labneh foam might be one of the best drinks I’ve had! Seafood and pasta was so fresh and complex flavors. Makes me want to go to Corsica and the Mediterranean asap!
