    2024

From the OpenTable editors: BCN Taste and Tradition is where you go for the ultimate Spanish fine-dining experience, thanks to Barcelona native and chef Luis Roger. In a charming 1920’s-style bungalow decked with art from Spanish artists like Pablo Picasso and Joan Miró, Roger impresses with artfully plated dishes like a suckling Ibérico pig and salt-cured cod with saffron mousseline. Stellar, all-Spanish wines and a deep gin and tonic list add to the transportative vibe at this MICHELIN-Starred Montrose gem.

Excellent experience. Excellent food, service, venue, drinks, wine selection, all excellent. Staff comes and greets you, including management, staff even enjoys bringing art artifacts to your table and sharing their origin and details. We were shown a ceramic owl by Picasso! Highly recommended, worth the wait to get in!

BCN is a lovely space with obvious attention to detail. However this - our first - visit was a bit underwhelming based on expectations. The gins and tonic were both beautiful and delicious. The wine list is obviously very thoughtfully put together but for an all-Spanish list is lacking the depth of unique and interesting wines the country has to offer. The octopus was tasty if a bit simple, the egg carpaccio was the highlight of the night as the most unique and delicious dish we had. For entrees we had rabbit and suckling pig. My rabbit was pretty heavily over-salted. It was still enjoyable and the porcini rice and sauces with it were still very good. The suckling pig was not what my wife was expecting and I wish the servers had been a bit better at communicating expectations for a dish which is essentially a slice of pork fat on a plate. The crispy filo dough was delicious and one of our servers offered a complimentary taste of dessert wine to go with which was a nice touch. Overall the dining experience was fine. The servers were cordial but didn’t offer very good explanations of the dishes, (we found ourselves asking about various components on the plate to confirm what they were) the beverages were lovely, and the food was just okay. For a restaurant which was just awarded a Michelin star - and one that’s been well loved and respected by the Houston community- I expected more.

The New Year’s Eve menu was highly disappointing for the cost. The courses were extremely small and all 3 of the pre fixed selections were distasteful. A complete waste of a very large sum of money paired with an imposed 20% gratuity. After previously celebrating several occasions at this restaurant, I have no plans to return or refer others based on this particular experience.

We went for the NYE 6 course menu which started w a slice of cold naked bread and some salami slivers. A little decanter of olive oil and sea salt flakes accompanied it. At this point I was already apprehensive. There was no amuse bouche to start with and I think that automatically deducts points imo. I felt that 2 maybe 3 of the 6 courses offered were really up to Michelin star standards in taste and presentation. Those were courses 1 and 3, and maybe 6. 3 of them really lacked in presentation. Those were courses 2, 4 and 5. Of those 3 that lacked in presentation, 1 still held its own in taste and that was 4, but I felt the serving size for it was much too small and should have been at least double or even triple what was served. I’m very ok with small bites but that one was much too small. Courses 2 and 5 were boring to be completely honest. They were well prepared in the cooking, but I found them very lacking in imagination. The last course was a dessert of 3 items, 1 of which was absolutely melt in your mouth delicious (the phillo) 1 was very surprising in a good way (the tart) and 1 was decent in taste and very appealing in look (the bonbon) That dish was very pretty in appearance and I’d say it mostly passed. Overall, I’d have to say for the price and taste, I’d likely not come back again, or really rave about it to anyone. I might just be too picky when it comes to what I think is worthy of a Michelin star but if I’m paying so much more, then I want to be wowed with every bite and I want every dish to be a work of art. I want to annoy all my friends with how much I go on about how great it was. It definitely is above the mark for restaurants in Texas, but I don’t think that’s saying much. I will say the service was very friendly and prompt. No issues there. Ambiance is neutral. Valet parking is available, but I didn’t see a parking lot. Anyway, it was ok. Nothing was bad, just not super great either.

I was very disappointed that they seated us 20 minutes after our scheduled time. They also did not come check on us or offer any apologies.
