Burdell is a Soul Food restaurant in the Temescal neighborhood of Oakland from James Beard Finalist, Chef Geoff Davis.

Named for and inspired by his maternal grandmother, Burdell, the restaurant reflects her love for well-set tables, entertaining guests, shared meals, and laughter. Burdell is centered on nostalgia, family recipes, thoughtful and sustainable sourcing, and the forgotten impact of Black farming, ranching, fishing, foraging, and culture on American cuisine and hospitality.

The menu highlights farmers and artisans harvesting and creating excellent products around us. Paired with the food is a robust list of wine and beverages from producers around the World-focusing on wines that are farmed and crafted with care and sustainable practices.

    Multiple dates available
    For parties of 7-9, your group will partake in our market-driven, multicourse Family Dinner Menu, instead of our regular a la carte menu. The price per person varies depending on what's on the menu for the week. Menu substitutions to this menu are politely declined. Kindly include any dietary restrictions on your reservation when booking so we can prepare appropriately for your visit (not all dietary restrictions may be accommodated). We do charge a cancellation fee person of $90 per person for no-shows and late cancellations as we hold the physical space in our small restaurant in anticipation of your larger party. As with everything, we charge a 20% service charge that supports livable wages for all staff as well as healthcare.

    Multiple dates available
    For groups of 9-15, we offer a market-driven, multicourse Family Brunch Menu for $85 per person (excluding taxes and 20% service charge). The three-course, family-style, Chef's pick meal includes a starter, main, and dessert, with menu offerings tailored to dietary restrictions (substitutions not allowed, not all dietary restrictions may be accommodated). Please inform us of any dietary needs when booking your reservation.     Incredible. Every bite was 10/10. Burdell is a special place. A vibe. If you're looking to sit down for a rushed dinner where wait staff comes to check on you every 5 minutes (very annoying, imo), this is not that place. Burdell is warm and inviting, like your grandma's house. Sit, relax, enjoy the mood lighting and the impeccable play list, put your phone away and lean into connection with good conversation in between delicious, well-balanced and creative courses absolutely bursting with flavor. Hats off to Chef Geoff and the Burdell team. Can't wait to come back.

    Burdell was recently named the 2024 Food & Wine Restaurant of the Year, and it is well-earned. The focus on traditional soul foot and an incredible 70s ambiance and decor couple for a relaxed, homey, but sophisticated dining experience. The chef, Geoff Davis, quietly delivers a majority of the dishes himself. I had a great experience at Burdell and highly recommend it!

    One of the best meals we’ve ever had! It was easy to get a reservation at a time we wanted and we were seated early when we arrived. The space is beautiful and service was great. We highly recommend the Family Dinner.

    This was our first time at Burdell. Our son recommended it, and I read the SF Chronicle piece. I didn’t know what to expect, but my husband and I were so delighted with this restaurant. The flavors! Everything we ate—the prawns, asparagus, lamb, chard and spinach, cornbread—was delicious. We will be back!

    Everything reminded me of Sunday dinners at grandmas house. The flavors paid homage to our ancestors with an elevated modern twist. Our grandmothers would be proud!

    I don't know why they're rated so highly. The food, except for the fried chicken, is over-salted. We had to send back the shrimp and grits because of it being so salty. Same for the hash and burger, too much salt. For the chicken and waffle you get only half a waffle, I expected to get a whole waffle, disappointing. I rarely give a negative review, but in this case, I made an exception.

    What a delightful experience it is having brunch at Burdell! It starts with the staff—welcoming, friendly, and responsive. Then there’s the cool environment with a warm and inviting feel, (comfortable and casual with class). The food is extraordinary! The dishes are popping with flavor. We had the asparagus salad with tahini sauce (best ever), broccoli & cheese croquettes (exceptionally delicious), biscuits & gravy (wonderful texture and pork gravy with just enough “kick”), chicken & waffles (perfection). The manager, Erica, is a joy! She makes every guest feel special, has a great sense of humor, and provides service second to none! We highly recommend Burdell.

    So disappointed after booking heading best in the USA. Fried chicken was dry and unseasoned. How do you also get coffee wrong? The salad and bacon was good.

    The shrimp and rice grits were the best!!! And I love that they had non alcoholic Champagne. Really made it feel like brunch for me!!
