Beneath the pulsing city lies a hidden dining destination. USDA Prime steaks from the finest Black Angus cattle. Bespoke cocktails. A restored Bank Vault from the 1930s. This is Butcher & Banker, a new "steakeasy" at the crossroads of Penn Station, Madison Square Garden, Javits Center and Hudson Yards.

Butcher & Banker is no ordinary steakhouse. A dozen different steaks are on offer, but non-steak eaters will dine exceedingly well here.

Butcher & Banker pays homage to the New Yorker Hotel’s storied history. The New Yorker opened in 1930 at the height of the Great Depression as the then largest hotel in the city. It has attracted a who’s who of entertainers and dignitaries from around the world, including Muhammad Ali, JFK, Joan Crawford and Nikola Tesla.

Beneath the hotel, a bank vault and offices were occupied by the Manufacturers Trust Company until 1980. With the opening of Butcher & Banker, the public can see the vault for the first time in 37 years.

Food and service was great. We booked a table for 2 and were seated in a cosy booth. Offered a choice of water straight away, shortly followed by warm dinner rolls and a choice of butter. Appetisers came out quickly and the presentation was amazing. We ordered the porterhouse for two which was plenty of meat for each of us. Plus two side orders. We saw a lot of reviews complaining about the service, but we found no faults with it. Being British we felt the service was more akin to European service which we are used to, so this was no problem for us. Overall a great dining experience for a special occasion. The only thing we can fault is the rules of the establishment not being followed by other diners. There is a sign in the lobby stating no flash photography, yet a table near us was taking photos with flash on. The website also states a dress code, however we did not see this being enforced as there were other patrons wearing tennis shoes, hoodies, hats at the table etc.

Honestly, very underwhelming for the money. Everything feels old, even the service, I wouldn’t have fun in this environment normally. Nothing pulling me to go back.

We asked for a table inside the vault and they were happy to accommodate us. Food and drink were very good. I had the scallops, daughter had the steak (which was amazing), friend had the burger. All very tasty! Would go back. Wait staff was friendly.

Went for an early dinner before a Bocelli concert at Madison Square Garden. Food was solid. Both of us had filet mignon’s cooked to order. We shared the maple bacon roasted brussel sprouts. Delicious. Cocktails were very well made. Only drawback was lighting (too dark!). Service was very good. Would definitely go again.

A Timeless Vaulted Escape in NYC For our 12th anniversary, my wife and I wanted a memorable dining experience, and we found it in this hidden gem tucked away in the historic New Yorker Hotel. Housed in what was once an old bank vault, this steakhouse offered more than just a meal; it was an enchanting journey into the past. From the moment we stepped through the doors, the ambiance transported us. My wife, who’s lived her whole life in New York, remarked that the setting made her feel like she wasn’t in the city at all. The design—ornate, elegant, and brimming with old-world charm—evoked a sense of grandeur. It felt like stepping into a 1920s time capsule where every guest seemed important, fancy, and yes, a little bougie. The food was exceptional. I started with the crab cake, which came paired with a vibrant wasacaca sauce—a unique Venezuelan-inspired touch that added a fresh, tangy kick. For my main course, I chose the buttery salmon, which quite literally melted in my mouth. It was perfectly cooked, rich, and flavorful, leaving me savoring every bite. My wife opted for one of their signature steaks, and it was cooked to perfection with just the right balance of char and tenderness. The service was attentive and thoughtful, matching the opulence of the venue. If I had one critique, it would be the lack of non-alcoholic beverage options on the menu. While it wasn’t a dealbreaker, a few curated mocktails or even house-made sodas could have rounded out the experience. Overall, this restaurant made our anniversary truly special. Between the historic setting, the exquisite food, and the impeccable attention to detail, it’s a place we’ll cherish as part of our memories. For anyone looking to escape the city’s hustle and immerse themselves in timeless elegance, this steakhouse is a must-visit.

It was a disappointing experience. We sat in the vault, which could have been very cool…but then there was a shelf of random antiques. Maybe they were somehow tied into the history but it just looked like your grandma decorated it. We ordered 3 New York strips, which were $58 each. They were all tough, lacked flavor abs were overall not good. The sides we ordered were the fries, mashed potatoes and maple bacon brussel sprouts. The fries and brussel sprouts were the best thing we ordered. The mashed potatoes were nothing special. For $350, we should not have left hungry.

Fantastic experience. Great food and service was on point. It was my birthday dinner and they brought a really nice dessert out with a candle.
