Beneath the pulsing city lies a hidden dining destination. USDA Prime steaks from the finest Black Angus cattle. Bespoke cocktails. A restored Bank Vault from the 1930s. This is Butcher & Banker, a new "steakeasy" at the crossroads of Penn Station, Madison Square Garden, Javits Center and Hudson Yards.

Butcher & Banker is no ordinary steakhouse. A dozen different steaks are on offer, but non-steak eaters will dine exceedingly well here.

Butcher & Banker pays homage to the New Yorker Hotel’s storied history. The New Yorker opened in 1930 at the height of the Great Depression as the then largest hotel in the city. It has attracted a who’s who of entertainers and dignitaries from around the world, including Muhammad Ali, JFK, Joan Crawford and Nikola Tesla.

Beneath the hotel, a bank vault and offices were occupied by the Manufacturers Trust Company until 1980. With the opening of Butcher & Banker, the public can see the vault for the first time in 37 years.

This was one of the worst dining experiences I’ve had in the city or anywhere. The manager came over upon us being seated and asked if we wanted a cocktail. I asked if he had a mocktail menu and he spun on his heel and walked away. The food was sub-par (we sent two items back and I NEVER send food back) and he came back around to ask how it was and we confessed we didn’t like one of the dishes. He then asked me if I’d ever had that food before (um yes, many times). He argued with me and kept asking why I didn’t like it. I was shocked by his aggressive behavior when he came over and asked what we thought. The only redeeming part of the restaurant was our server. I’ll never go back - way too many great choices to waste our time here again.

If you’re looking for a quiet place for dinner with no scene then this place is for you. Tucked away in the basement of the New Yorker hotel in what was once a bank vault is a NYC gem.

The food was fine, and fairly priced. The Bacon appetizer and Lobster Mac and cheese were great. The service wasn’t great. I’m not sure if the server was oversat or just wasn’t very good, but our party was repeatedly left with empty drinks for extended periods periods of time and the waiter never came to check on how the food was. The manager came over at one point to check in on the table and we simply let him know things were fine and left it at that. It wasn’t worth getting into while we were having a nice conversation. While I don’t think you’ll be disappointed at this restaurant, I’m not sure I’d go back.

Wagu beef flavor was outstanding Brussels sprouts were mushy Cola was flat Waiter brought check instead of the dessert we ordered. Ambiance was awesome

Reservations were at 9pm and we were rushed because the kitchen supposedly closes at 9:15. If you know your kitchen closes at that time, don’t seat people 15 minutes before it closes just to rush us. It’s rude and unprofessional. We didn’t even get the chance to go over the appetizers because he forced us to just order our entrees. Terrible service. One and done for this place!
