The Canal Bistro is the realization of a dream for Mona and George Hanna. George's homeland is Egypt; Mona spent her first 23 years in Lebanon. They know Mediterranean cooking. George has been in the restaurant business for 22 years. And over the years, Mona watched her mother and grandmother cook for their big family from their own herb and vegetable gardens, learning the value of freshness in cooking.

George says. "It's been our dream to open our own place, to be creative with cuisine, and to have a family business that our sons can be a part of."

The Canal Bistro is that dream. "It's like you've come to one of our parties -- we've basically just moved our kitchen from home to here," they say. "We put the grill in the dining room because we want people to know that we are using top quality ingredients, and that freshness is our goal, so everything is done right in front of you."

                                                                                                          We visit the Canal Bistro about once a month. The Mediterranean cuisine is authentic and tasty. There are a variety of vegan options for my son. We love the fresh pita and the appetizers are fantastic, especially the spanakopita, falafel and hummus. The main courses are generously portioned and well seasoned. For a change of pace, try the flaming saganaki. For brunch, the French Toast with baklava filling is dreamy. The red sangria is some of the best I’ve tasted in the city. The price points are reasonable.

                                                                                                          I absolutely love Canal Bistro and it’s the perfect spot to eat a good meal and catch up with old friends. This is where I invite people from out of town to come eat because the prices are stellar for the food you receive and the service is exceptional. Definitely consider dining here if you haven’t already.

                                                                                                          This is one of the best restaurants in Indianapolis. The Saganaki, calamari (or calamari salad), the garlic feta fries, the sangria. I haven’t had anything here I didn’t like. If you are eating inside, it can be quite loud during busy hours. I prefer to sit outside or come during off-hours. You might consider adding sound-damping materials to make the noise volume more pleasant for patrons.

                                                                                                          There was a huge party in the middle of the restaurant and it was so noisey that we could not enjoy our conversation. The service was fair, considering the number of people being served in the restaurant. The chicken kabobs were the worst I've ever had. They were so dry and flavorless. The other food, saganaki, greek salad and gyros platters were reported by others in our party to be good. The wine pour was very small for the price. I'm not in a hurry to go back there.

                                                                                                          Not sure why this restaurant is rated so highly. Service is fantastic, the food, not so much. The hummus was gritty and lacking in flavor, the spanakopita was very good as was the falafel. The lamb shank was overcooked and not very flavorful; the beef shawarma was cold and also overcooked. Definitely a 2-3 star rating for the food, nothing better.

                                                                                                          We had a great lunch experience from beginning to end. Everyone we interacted with was friendly and responsive. Sky was a top notch server. Food was DELICIOUS! It's a great atmosphere though a little too chilly. I will look forward to coming again.
