From the OpenTable editors: Few places do Spanish food as well as this cozy Gramercy restaurant serving some of the city's best tapas since 2003. Star chef Andy Nusser makes the food he grew up eating in Spain, and dishes like garlicky razor clams, delicate bone marrow, and creamy scrambled eggs with uni have helped the restaurant score a MICHELIN star and a coveted three-star review from The New York Times.

Every dish we ordered was fresh, flavorful, and perfectly cooked, especially the duck breast, which was properly crispy on the outside and tender on the inside. The wine was reasonably priced and well-chosen. Waiters were attentive and worked collaboratively. The environment is cozy and lively, yet not uncomfortably crowded or overly noisy. We felt like respected guests

A dependably excellent spot for some of the best tapas in NYC. The wine list - all Spain - is extensive and impressive. The space inside is a wee tight but charming. And the location on Irving Place is great. Recommend highly.

FAQs

Portions are tapas-style small plates designed for sharing. Guests commonly say plates are small but meant to be shared, many recommend ordering several plates per person (for two people, about 4–6 dishes is typical). Prices are on the higher side for small plates, so plan to order multiple items or add a bottle from the wine list if you want a full meal.

Casa Mono is busiest on weekend evenings and peak dinner hours when the room is lively and buzzy. The quietest times tend to be weekday lunch or earlier dinner seatings. Bar seating is constantly popular and can be busy even during off-peak times.

For a calmer experience, choose a weekday (Monday–Thursday) or lunch service. If you want full energy and the classic tapas buzz, Friday or Saturday evenings are great, just expect a lively, crowded room and book ahead.

Casa Mono lists daily hours (12:00–11:00) and guests have dined there on holidays (e.g., Mother's Day), so it often operates on public holidays. Because hours can vary on specific holidays, call to confirm hours and availability before planning a holiday visit.

Families do dine at Casa Mono, guests report bringing teens and celebrating birthdays, but the space is small and tables are closely spaced. There isn’t a noted kids’ menu, and tight seating can make strollers or very young children less comfortable. The restaurant accepts private and large parties, so for family needs (high chair, quieter table or private area) call ahead to discuss accommodations.

Families do dine at Casa Mono and guests often bring teens or celebrate birthdays with children. The menu is tapas-focused without a kids menu, and the small, lively room can be cramped for very young children. For a more comfortable family visit, consider an early seating or inquire about a private table when you reserve.

Casa Mono is best known for its chef-driven tapas and wine experiences rather than public discounts. Guests report sommelier-led pairings and occasional intimate wine tastings; the front-of-house team often suggests curated pairings or guided bottles for a special evening. For specific events or tasting experiences, contact the restaurant or check its announcements.

Yes, Casa Mono is a favorite for date nights thanks to its intimate, buzzy tapas-bar vibe, elevated Spanish cooking and an extensive wine program. Many guests praise the cozy atmosphere, attentive service and standout plates like pan con tomate, bone marrow and skirt steak. Note the space is small and can get noisy; for a quieter, more intimate evening request an indoor table or a corner/booth when booking. Reservations are recommended for weekend nights and special occasions.

A formal waiting-list policy isn’t specified, but Casa Mono is very popular and guests report being turned away or experiencing waits when late. Reservations are strongly recommended, and if you arrive early or late you may face a wait, call ahead on busy nights to check availability or to be added to any in-house list.

Yes, Casa Mono accepts private parties and can accommodate larger groups. Guests have reported private/quiet corner tables for special occasions; contact the restaurant directly to discuss party size, menus and availability.

Yes, Casa Mono has an extensive alcohol program. Guests frequently praise the sommelier and wine pairings; the restaurant features a deep Spanish-focused wine list (Rioja, Priorat, Rías Baixas, sherry, vermut) plus beer and sparkling options. Bring your curiosity, staff and the sommelier often guide wine selections.

For a livelier, classic tapas experience go for a weekend evening or sit at the bar to watch the kitchen. If you want a quieter meal, try weekday lunch or an earlier evening seating, guests note lunch and early reservations are calmer. Bar seating is popular and offers great theater; book ahead for prime tables on busy nights.

Yes, Casa Mono is a long-standing, award-winning spot: it has been a Michelin 1‑Star restaurant (multiple years including 2021–2024) and received three stars from The New York Times in 2015. Those honors underscore the kitchen’s consistency and culinary reputation.

Yes, the menu is seasonal and evolves; guests mention new spring dishes and the kitchen’s menu evolution over time. Expect rotating specials and seasonal plates alongside beloved staples; ask your server about tonight’s features.

Yes, Casa Mono offers an outdoor seating area (often covered and used seasonally). Guests frequently mention dining outside; some note the outdoor space can be chilly or drafty in cold weather, so request indoor seating if you prefer warmth or quieter surroundings.

Casa Mono offers bar seating, a compact indoor dining room with tables close together, and a covered outdoor area. The bar is a favorite for watching the kitchen; the outdoor space can be covered/heated but guests advise checking seasonal comfort. The restaurant also accommodates private parties, call ahead if you need a specific seating setup.

Smart casual is the recommended dress code. Guests typically dress neatly but comfortably, think polished casual attire appropriate for a Michelin-starred tapas bar in Union Square.

Casa Mono is open daily from 12:00 pm to 11:00 pm. For best availability, especially on weekend evenings, make a reservation in advance.

The ambiance is energetic, cozy and distinctly tapas-bar: lively, warm and chef-driven. Guests love the buzzy, convivial energy and open-kitchen feel, which can make it feel intimate but also noisy and tightly packed, perfect if you want a spirited night out, less ideal if you prefer a very quiet dinner.

Yes, Casa Mono accommodates reasonable advance requests. Guests have had birthday notes acknowledged and staff will help with seating preferences, private party arrangements or dietary needs. Because the space is compact, call ahead to confirm accommodations like indoor vs. outdoor seating, accessibility needs, or menu adjustments.
