We found the food very good but we were very disappointed by the service. From the minute we arrived , the pressure was on to eat up quickly. The minute we were finished our starters , the main course was served and the staff hovered over us to see if we were finished. Then our dessert course was served. Before we were half way through it, the bill was produced to the table. They then practically stood at the table waiting for us to vacate the table. There was no one wafting for it and there were a number of other tables free. We appreciate that restaurants are trying to maximise numbers but it should not be at the discomfort of diners. We will not be returning.

Hi Mary, we’re glad you enjoyed the food, but we’re sorry you felt rushed. One of your guests arrived 45 minutes late, and we had communicated that the table was needed back by 8pm due to a fully booked evening. As a small restaurant with limited seating, we rely on precise timing, and unfortunately, late arrivals can create pressure for both guests and staff. The dishes were served as soon as they were ready, and we began taking payment to prepare for the next seating. The empty tables you noticed were also booked for 8pm. We always aim to deliver a warm, relaxed experience, and we’re sorry this didn’t come across on the night. We appreciate your feedback and wish the evening had unfolded more smoothly for everyone involved. Merci again for visiting.

A bistro I enjoy going to, the setting, food and staff are very good - today there was no plat du jour, which is ok, the St Emilion wine by the glass wasn’t available - so our 2 glasses of the pomerol wine was our next choice, the 2 glasses of wine came to €27! That is very very expensive. I’ve done reviews for the bistro before and as I say enjoy going to Chez Max but a 2 course lunch, with 2 glasses of wine plus 2 coffees for 2 people came to €96.30 …. It’s very hard to justify.
Chez MaxResponded on April 14, 2025
Merci, Liz, for your kind words and continued support — we’re always happy to welcome you back. We understand your concern about pricing. Like many in hospitality, we’ve seen rising costs across the board, from VAT and supplier prices to import duties on French wine. While we try to absorb as much as we can, some premium items like wine by the glass are affected. Your feedback is genuinely appreciated, and we’re always reviewing our pricing to balance quality and value. We hope to see you again soon.

Had the french onion soup and ribeye steak. Enjoyed them both. Staff were good and attentive, good weather made outside dining enjoyable. If I was to be picky, menu didnt cater for kids.

We had the onion soup and foie gras to start, can't fault it at all. For mains we had ray wings (new on the menu in the last couple weeks, hopefully staying on) and beef bourguignon (always delish). Topped off with apple tart tatin and and creme brulee, all washed down with a steady Malbec. Very tasty night indeed. The staff and service are outstanding.
Chez MaxResponded on March 31, 2025
Merci, Rachel! Delighted you enjoyed everything—from the onion soup and foie gras to the beef bourguignon and ray wings. And of course, a sweet finish with the apple tart tatin and crème brûlée, all paired with a lovely Malbec—sounds like a perfect evening! The team will be chuffed with your kind words. Looking forward to welcoming you back again soon.
