Why they're an Icon

Executive chef: Chef Kristi Brown

From the OpenTable editors: Eater, The New York Times, Condé Nast Traveler, and the James Beard Awards have all sung the praises of chef Kristi Brown's Seattle soul cooking at Communion. The pork neck stew is non-negotiable, alongside creative dishes such as "hood sushi," or cornmeal-crusted catfish rolled with pickled veggies and remoulade. That plus the welcoming vibes in the industrial chic space set in the city's historic Black district have made Communion one of the country's best new restaurants in recent years.

My group of 4 were seated outside for dinner. It was rainy and somewhat cold, and our server offered us blankets to stay warm. There was also an overhead heater that kept us cozy. The restaurant was out of lemonade and sweet tea, but our server offered a "dealer's choice" non-alcoholic drink which was refreshing and delicious. It was a pink drink that had a sprig of rosemary in it (rosemary happens to be my favorite herb). Everything we ordered for food was delicious and cooked well. The hoe cakes (3 in an order) were moist and buttery. The mussels and clams dish was so good, and the sauce they came in was very flavorful with a slight spicy kick. We also got the mojo chicken over garlic rice and the unc's fried chicken which were very tender. The grilled okra with onions as well as the collard greens were really good sides. For dessert, we had the salted caramel ice cream and bread pudding which were just the right amount of sweet. They serve family style here, and all the dishes were ordered were enough to satisfy a table of 4 people (our server recommended we order 5-6 dishes total). The only thing we thought was weird was the last dish to come out was the collard greens which was just weird timing to finish our meal with a side. Your whole order is put in, so things come out as they are ready to serve. Besides that, the atmosphere was lovely, and the whole experience was great. The staff here are very friendly and knowledgeable about the menu and helped us make choices for what to order. I am definitely coming back and hope to get seated at a table inside because the music they play in the restaurant is some soulful rhythm and blues.

This was my second time and my girlfriend’s first. We got the fritters, pinto beans, fried chicken & hoe cakes. The pinto beans and chicken were absolutely delicious. The other two things had a nice flavor, but nothing we’d return for. The service was top-notch and the restaurant runs like a well-oiled machine. The only drawback is the noise. It’s so loud with only half the restaurant full that we practically yelled our conversation or didn’t chat at all. I know it’s nothing the location can adjust, so I don’t hold it against the business. Looking forward to the opportunity of sitting outside in warmer weather next year, which may help with this one issue. Overall, great spot, spectacular service, excellent food.

Chef Kristi Brown is curious, playful, and inventive with her menu, and yet every dish tastes like home somehow. This place feels alive every time I'm there, and I can't wait until I get to visit again. So much respect for what she and her team are building here.

The host said my reservation wasn’t assigned to a table and asked if I we could eat outside or possibly the bar. (It was 40 degrees out since it’s December). They sat us at the bar and there was a very loud large group sitting and standing next to us. There were two open tables in the restaurant which I asked to be moved to. The host said those tables are assigned to other reservations but I also had a reservation so why couldn’t we be moved? We ending up sitting outside. Our server there was lovely. Overall unimpressed by the overall experience.

My party of 4 weren’t seated until an hour after my reservation. I was told we would be seated shortly and everytime we inquired as to how much longer we were told another 10 minutes or so. As we waited, we were told to wait outside because the front area gets too crowded. Although they had heat lamps and an electric fire pit, it was very cold outside, like 35/40 degrees. Still very cold. One person in my party stated they would not be back and another person in my party said the same thing happened when they were there with their spouse a few weeks prior. Now she’s contemplating if she will return again. The straw that broke the camels back was when we were basically told to wrap things up because they needed the table. Our bill came up to over $450 (without gratuity) and this whole experience was not worth that I have to say. The food and drinks are extremely good though, so that makes it hard not to come back. But if I come back to the same experience, that’s it for me!

Amazing food! Everything we ordered was delicious. One of the big surprises was the massaged collard greens salad. My husband really ordered it for me because I love Kale and strong greens like collards. We both gobbled it up it was that good. The ho cakes; so yummy and light. Mac and cheese; not overly heavy, cheesy goodness on a cold blustery night. The Adobo chicken was incredible, perfectly cooked and the flavors were unforgettable. We will be back for more food to try on the menu!
