Cooks & Soldiers brings the cuisine and cultural experience of Spain’s Basque region to the flourishing West Midtown area. The menu is divided into “pintxos tradicionales,” or tapas-like snacks served atop toasted bread; “pinxtos especiales,” or Basque-inspired small plates; “asador” including a variety of wood-grilled fish, meats and vegetables; and a selection of unique and modern desserts. Behind the bar, Cooks & Soldiers offers guests an extensive collection of Basque and Spanish wines, txakoli and ciders, in addition to craft beer and signature cocktails. The cocktail list places a heavy emphasis on gin, offering a seasonal selection of house-infused tonics blended into gin tonics and other popular libations.

I’ve heard great things about Cooks and Soldiers for years but finally tried it last night. Making a reservation was easy, but the seating arrangement for six was awkward, with four in the middle and one on each end, making conversation difficult. The chairs were poorly maintained, with splintered edges that ruined my new stockings. I had to sit on a cloth napkin to prevent further damage. The food was overly greasy and excessively salty, with little complexity. It was “fine” but not particularly good. The cocktails, however, were excellent and the best part of the night. Service was disorganized. Four of us wanted the “experience” menu, but the other two preferred à la carte. We were told the entire table had to order the same, which was frustrating and not mentioned on the menu. Drinks were delayed, silverware was removed and not replaced, and it was nearly impossible to get a server’s attention when needed. The noise level was unbearable. Music drowned out the server explaining specials, and we had to shout to hear each other, making the experience stressful rather than enjoyable. Cooks and Soldiers feels like one of those overhyped, overpriced restaurants. I won’t be returning and regret inviting my guests there.

We celebrated a birthday in style with fabulous food, unique and tasty cocktails, and staff fussing over us. We loved every moment and can’t wait to go back!

That was my first time there and everyone was kind and helpful. Joanna was our server and the bartender made great drinks! The food was so good! I will definitely go back and try some other things. I am not a big steak eater, but that Dry aged ribeye was to die for!!!! Patatas bravas, Arroz Caldoso, Mountain Bread and carrots were all top notch!

My fiancé and I had the opportunity to be a part of Cooks & Soldiers’ 10 year anniversary celebration, and let me tell you that we were BEYOND IMPRESSED. There was a stellar tasting menu with generous portions, and service was TOP-NOTCH!!! A huge shoutout goes to WILLIAM (a former manager who’s now at a another location within the CHG but even made a guest appearance 🫨), JO (one of our go-to servers), DEJA (the general manager - my apologies if I misspelled your name), JOSH (another manager), the bartenders, the chef, and the rest of the Cooks & Soldiers team (both FOH and BOH). The hospitality/customer service and teamwork was impeccable, which was refreshing to witness. When I didn’t think it was possible, Cooks & Soldiers did it again, providing yet another unforgettable dining experience!!! Honestly though, I shouldn’t be surprised when this is the standard the CHG has set. Kudos to you all and keep up the great work!!! Here’s to future success and many more celebrations!!!
