Why they're an Icon

Executive chef: Serigne Mbaye

From the OpenTable editors: Born in NYC and raised in Dakar, chef Serigne Mbaye has garnered national acclaim for his deeply personal pescatarian Senegalese tasting menu, including a James Beard Award for Best New Restaurant in 2024 and a spot on the prestigious TIME100 Next List the same year. Step into the jewel box restaurant for a memorable evening, where some of the dishes are served family-style and where you'll learn about the history of the food and drinks in front of you. Expect a welcome tea, before diving into the seasonal seven-course menu that might include Gulf shrimp and smoky jollof rice.

My husband and I loved the experience and atmosphere. The staff was excellent. I highly recommend this restaurant. It is amazing how the same food and ingredients from Louisiana can be utilized to make a dish taste so different but delicious.

March 7, 2025 10:05 AM Community and Conversation Caught in the beautiful ties of conversation Brey, Frankie and I form deep bonds With a group of women who were Hours prior only strangers … “An Experience to Nurture the Soul” The outside of our menu reads And as we compliment The meals and one another Chef Serigne comes to our table And shares wisdom that permeates The gentle air and brings us closer together … He tells of how the the pandemic prior Not only brought fear But our bonds with strangers — Thus our community — Was truly severed … We warmly welcome one another With the Ataya … “Green tea, ginger, and mint” A liquid appetizer Before embracing one another The foundation to our friendship … Laughs shared over my Lavender Toubatini Conversation hugs as the Hibiscus Bissap is sipped slowly And calm truths shared while drinking Lyre’s Strawberry Spritz … The Cassava forms the basement Of our bonds of friendship It is then sweetly layered With Strawberry Salad Before the columns Of The Last Meal are formed Before closing with The Dakar Candied Apple … The meal was just as beautiful As the people … So, the importance of the communal table Is to not only share food With who was once a former stranger To build bonds of friendship Share our stories and experiences And memories that will last forever … — Kibbs Fortilus

They even brought little stools for the women to set their purses on. I have never seen a restaurant do that before. The communal table is a wonderful idea.

Everything was Phenomenal! The food and service were impeccable. Being a New Orleanian, the combination of flavors were new and different but still fealt familiar. The meal was 7-courses and we cleaned every plate. It was a 2 hour culinary journey that I am looking forward to taking again. There was an abundance of team members to guide us through our journey. You could tell that each person working were invested in maximizing our experience. Can't wait to return.

A 5 Star DINING EXPERIENCE! There are no adequate words that I could use to give it justice. It was a dining experience like no other - the atmosphere, the detail, the attention to diners - the level of food creativity is 5 star! We were there to celebrate my daughter’s 30th Birthday. From the sit down - you washed your hands at the table with lovely soap, warm water that was poured and cloth towels. The seven course dining experience - We savored every course, every bite - OMG! Everyone was attentive - from the General Manager, the servers, and staff. High honors and admiration to the creative minds and hands in the kitchen lead by Chef Serigne and Wife Effie! The 2 James Beard Awards - Earned! It is Michelin Star Worthy! Wishing the Owners and Staff God’s Blessings for a Great Future - and it’s a WELCOMED ADDITION TO OUR CULINARY MECCA!!!!!!
