The 1740 General Stanton Inn was named best new restaurant in Southern Rhode Island. Guests delight in traditional Rhode Island cuisine with emphasis on fresh local seafood-- Oysters, clams, calamari, swordfish, shrimp, scallops and our signature dish, Portuguese Cod. Our friendly bartenders excel at making Martinis, Old fashioneds and craft cocktails. Local craft beers are on draft, and the wine list is comprehensive.

Located in the beach community of Charlestown, Rhode Island, The General Stanton is the quintessential New England Inn with charming colonial architecture which dates back to the 1700's. The Inn is rich in history having hosted George Washington and three US Presidents. The Inn was a stagecoach stop, underground railroad safehouse and an illicit gambling house in the roaring 1920's.

    My boyfriend and I enjoyed a 10/10 meal on Valentine’s Day. Our server was amazing, the host was very accommodating and kind, and the food was awesome. We left raving about how good everything was and how cool the history of the building is. I appreciate the whole staff for making it a memorable meal for two people that rarely treat ourselves to a meal of that caliber!

    I’m just being 100 honest - we ordered the beef Wellington which we have in the past and it was excellent in the past. This time mine was overcooked, well done on the edges and medium at best in the middle (should be med rare) and it was terribly under seasoned as well. I kept having to add salt and pepper to give it flavor. The pastry was also under done and soggy on the bottom. The cut of meat was also not your typical filet cut, it was a bit tough. I feel for $55 each, it should be done to perfection no matter what day it is. Our waitress was excellent and the place over all was very nice. We will go back but will probably try something other than the beef.

    Had a very enjoyable evening during restaurant week, food, service and Jazz trio were all wonderful.

    Everything was excellent. Our first time having prime rib there. It was amazing! Everything was enjoyable - the ambiance, the service, & the food. I highly recommend it.

    I had steak frites and my friend had chicken Marsala. They were both delicious. Our server was nice and friendly

    Everyone was welcoming and friendly; server ( I think her name is Sequoia ) was excellent and attentive. Our hamburgers were much served more rare than we requested, She took them back very graciously and followed up. They were not very different the second time unfortunately, but we took half home to reheat ( we did not say anything to her at that point ). The food overall was delicious and we would visit again.

    The food was good, the portions small for the price. My sides came cold which is always annoying to me. The waitress was helpful and tried to fix it.

    From the moment You walk in, to the service, drinks and food, everything was absolutely amazing and delicious!! All around the experience truly the best.
