Nestled in the bustling theatre precinct sits the home of Melbourne’s favourite hawker-style street food. Over 10 years, Gingerboy has become a laneway icon, along with the Australian freestyle cuisine Chef Teage Ezard has become known for.

With fresh produce and protein at the forefront, Gingerboy has become known for small bites like mushroom dumplings and scallop sui mai, as well as sharing plates such as the red duck leg curry and whole fried fish. Cocktails are never an afterthought, perfectly blended with their own unique take on the Asian fusion style, and given a home away from home at Gingerboy Upstairs.

Our group of 6 friends thoroughly enjoyed our booking for The Melbourne Food & Wine Restaurant Express lunch. Food was delicious . Wine was excellent also. Two of the group had dietary issues which were handled discreetly by the waiting staff. Staff friendly, welcoming & attentive to our needs. We all agreed that we would come back to Gingerboy again.

Food is great I have been here 6 or 7 times now when I’m in Melbourne. Not a huge fan of the beer selection, but otherwise everything is great!

I've NEVER left a bad review, but the other day at Gingerboy it was a disaster. Reserved a table via Open Table for a birthday occasion. When we showed up, was told that no booking existed (even though I had email and mobile confirmations) because the system doesn't link with the restaurant. Waited 30 mins, finally they placed us upstairs but the top floor had total lack of service and managed by the most slow paced downbeat bartender (perhaps the lack of staff upstairs forcing him to serve is making him hate his job?) Worst menu explanation too, sounded almost like he has never dined in the restaurant. Guests were getting annoyed with the attitude and no service, we complained and luckily was able to be moved downstairs with the other diners. From then on the night was fine and the staff a LOT nicer, attentive and gasps - actually smiling! Almost ruined a special occasion. Gingerboy, what happened? You used to be on my list for top Melbourne restaurants. If the online booking system doesn't work, then don't use it. If your staff needs support, re-evaluate your capacity. Highly highly disappointed. Will definitely not visit anymore, especially not for special occasions.

Gingerboy is my go-to restaurant for international guests. It never disappoints with its amazing flavors and food presentation. The staff and friendly and attentive, but not intrusive.

We booked online to entertain friends from interstate thru Opentable. Our reservation was not actioned, despite receiving a confirmation email and a text the day prior. Very nice staff contacted us apologising for the mishap. I was extremely impressed with Gingerboys attempts to recover the situation but there was no outcome as only slot available now was 2045. Our original reservation was at 1845. We had spaghetti bolognaise at home. We were left very very disappointed as a result of a booking malfunction during the xmas season. And yes, it was my husbands birthday.

Maybe we went on an off night. We had been told about the pedigree of Gingerboy and its reputation since opening has been obvious. Despite requesting to sit in main restaurant, we were put upstairs and this was like a dead zone. No atmosphere, no music. We asked for the Four Pillars special Prosecco cocktail. It hadn't been mixed properly - more like layered, so needed furious stirring by all at table to get to taste properly. We ordered the $90 banquet, including the Wagyu. It was a lot of food - lots of fried things at the start to fill you up, the waitress was great - and really took us through the journey of what was on each plate. But when she went on break, the next waitress couldn't care and dumped food and ran! and the plates came at random times - sometimes long waits, sometimes quick. The best part of the banquet came in the last courses, but by that stage we were too full. Not one dish was a standout or must have. The Wagyu was only 4 slices of beef, and couldn't taste any sauce on it. The duck leg red curry was served with corn balls - but the waitress suggested dipping in curry sauce to give them flavour? I think in short, we turned up on a night when Gingerboy was not in top form. I can't think of any particular reason to return because neither food nor service (except the one waitress) was anything special - a shame

Initially had no record of our booking but accommodated us quickly. Decor feels a little dated and I was disappointed with the food. It tasted good but is not in the same caliber as other modern-Asian CBD counterparts. Feed me menu is more pricey than others in the area. Don't think I will return in a hurry.
