This place has some of the best and unique sushi I have ever had. My favorite was the butter fish nigiri, it came with the most perfect bite of fish and sushi. We got the 44 sampler, the octopus and the tuna belly (limited) and everything was just melt in your mouth amazing. We met the owner, who was such a humble and nice guy, he explained every dish with care and you could tell that he loves what he does because he truly puts his all into it. I would give this place 100/10 if I could. Also the cream that is paired with the sake pairs is to die for!

Extremely noisy, with several different sources of loud music and a movie playing, all conflicting, so ambience wasn't great. The food was tasty, albeit reheated and so quite dry, and the portions were very small. Half a plate, effectively. Served without rice, which was odd. When we requested rice, we got cold sushi rice, for an additional price. Would not recommend.

I tried Iwami based on all the great reviews, and left very disappointed. First off, it’s not obvious on their website that they’re not a standalone restaurant, but rather one of many in a loud communal space called Chefs Hall. The area they do have is small and you’re squished if you sit at the bar. The food was not up to my standards. The spicy mayo was not spicy, and both the spicy mayo and the soy sauce were kind of sweet. The ginger and wasabi are both weak in flavour, so even trying to punch up my bite with those didn’t work. I had the Kazan roll and it was okay. I also had the Dragon roll. It says there’s a chipotle sauce on it but I didn’t taste any kind of smoky heat that chipotle usually offers. Probably because the teriyaki was also sweet so it masked everything. The seared salmon on top was not my favourite flavour, but that’s not Iwami’s fault. It’s just a preference thing. Lastly, this roll has a slimy texture with all of the sauces and stuff. I didn’t finish this roll. This has nothing to do with the competency of the staff. The rolls were built well and quickly. But the recipes and suppliers of their components need to be re-evaluated. Based on the food and atmosphere alone, I would not go back.

Absolute gem in the middle of the city. One of the best meals I can remember, because the chef’s passion and talent were so apparent, and personally shared. Try the Carbonara Udon!

What a nice surprise of a place for Japanese food! The food was fresh and has a good variety to choose from. The service was attentive. The place was small but the experience overall was superb. We loved the Udon carbonara, fresh oysters, plus all the nigiris and rolls. Their hotate scallops were out of this world. Lastly, it was a great value for the quality of the food.
