Judith is a new American tavern pairing warm hospitality and the cooking of James Beard Nominated Chef Julia Sullivan (Henrietta Red in Nashville) located in the quiet area of Sewanee, TN near the University of the South. The name is an homage to Judith Ward Lineback, the first woman to matriculate into the University in 1969.

As Sullivan’s first solo project, Judith will feature a seasonal menu of creative and approachable dishes including a selection of small, shareable plates perfect for the bar crowd. The beverage program mirrors the food with accessible wines and a cocktail list created by Henrietta Red's Beverage Manager Patrick Halloran.

The warehouse-style building, previously the Old Steam Laundry which serviced the University since the 1950’s, has additional space for private dining and parties. With the goal of becoming a meeting place for students, faculty, tourists and the Sewanee community alike, the restaurant will be open for dinner from Thursday - Monday.

Was so excited about this opening and finally made it to town to try it. Perhaps Valentines Day wasn’t the time to test it out . . . overall left the restaurant quite UNimpressed 1. As sweet as our server was, she was a deer in the headlights. Every question we asked she could not confidently answer. She had to keep going back to the kitchen and bartender for answers to simple requests and was very unsure of herself. 2. Trout entree came out cold. Sent back for reheating and while plate was returned hot, fish was still cold. 3. Burgers were plated and wrapped in paper - and SIZED like something from In n Out burger. While they were delicious, by far not enough to feed two 200+ pound guys. In addition, there was no mention of them coming a la carte nor any question from server as to whether or not they’d like fries or a salad - or anything - to accompany that tiny, single patty burger. It was 1/4 pound of meat at best and the guys were starving afterwards but dare not try and order anything else as service was so slow. 3 out of 4 of our party left the restaurant starving and unfulfilled - after signing off in a $300 check. Went to find food elsewhere. Won’t be back!

We come here for date night and have really enjoyed its presence in Sewanee. It can be pricy, but the food is unmatched for miles around the domain. Service was friendly while also giving us space to enjoy our meal and time together, and the ambiance is clean and relaxing. Would recommend to anyone looking for a special dining experience!

The food was really good and the wine list/cocktails pretty extensive. We were sitting a bit too close to the front door, so there was a cold breeze every time the door opened, but we very much enjoyed our first visit and will return.
