About this restaurant

  • Neighbourhood gem
  • Good for special occasions
  • Charming
A letter from the founder,

From the time I can remember, while I was growing up in this Italian neighborhood, the North End of Boston, my grandmother, Crocefissa Barbara Summa, was a great influence in my life.
It was at her dinner table that I learned of friendship and love, and by her side I discovered the art of Italian cooking. I learned it all begins with the best ingredients to bring out the simplicity of flavors of Sicilian cuisine as well as the many various regions throughout Italy. It pleases me that you selected to dine at La Summa. I know that your experience will be warm and pleasant, with culinary pleasures. - Barbara Summa Sullivan ( JULY 3, 1940 – SEPTEMBER 16, 2022)

Booked a 5:30 reservation for my family (visiting from New Jersey- but life long Brooklyn Italians…) here after reading reviews for family friendly places in the north end- we were with my 4yr old & 1yr old- small room but very inviting/intimate- they easily accommodated us even though our taxi drove us through TD Garden traffic and we were 15mins late - they had our table ready with a high chair- and brought out the spaghetti & meatballs already split for the kids very quickly - it was a big hit - my 1yr old at the entire plate of food - I would suggest the fresh pastas for sure. Chicken parm was also a good choice. Rice ball appetizer was very delicious- and the homemade vanilla & chocolate gelato with a cherry covered in a chocolate shell special dessert special was amazing (what i would call tartufo but that is actually something hazelnut on the menu…) - and they brought us lemon peels for our espresso on request (iykyk). Seemed like a real authentic family run place- our server/host was very sweet with the kids - food came out very fast. Wine list was very reasonable (we had the DEI Montepulciano and everyone loved it). The real highlight was at 7pm (Saturday night) when we were finishing our meal a gentleman came out to sing a couple of Italian songs and happy birthday to my mom- it made our night! The kids (and adults) loved it! As an added bonus location is convenient- We walked over to Mike’s Pastry before heading back to our hotel. Great end to our trip.

Absolutely amazing! From the service to the food- it was one of the best restaurants my family has ever been to. We loved the stuffed artichoke, chicken parm, caprese salad, pasta with meatballs and pasta fagioli. a

Service was very good and the singing was an unexpected treat. The food itself is mediocre, however. There are a lot of better places in the north end. That said, it’s a fine place for group or work colleagues, I just wouldn’t recommend for a special occasion.
