Le Coq is James Beard Best Chef finalist Tara Monsod’s new wave French steakhouse. Inspired by the modern Parisian culinary landscape, chef Tara reinvents classic dishes through her signature approach, blending cross-cultural references and ingredients for a distinctly SoCal expression of French cuisine. Bright touches and hyper-seasonal products ground the menu with San Diego style, while nods to chef Tara’s Southeast Asian background are interwoven throughout. Located in downtown La Jolla in a 1930’s historic building with exposed brick walls, steel trusses, and a barrel-vaulted ceiling. Into this storied shell is inserted a posh 1970’s diner club.

On y trouve des classiques français revisités avec des influences du sud de la Californie et de l'Asie. By far, this was the worst experience. This place doesn’t know to handle situations and treat people.

Really enjoyed the ambience and elegance of this restaurant a little disappointing that every single thing, including basic bread was a high charge cost. My meal came to me on a plate with just a steak in the center staring at me. No garnish no sides. Just the steak lol This was a date night, so I really wasn’t there to judge the food. The ambience and staff were awesome. I definitely got what I paid for and it was well worth it. Happy wife happy life. Amen

AMAZING first experience at Le Coq! They are serious about their cocktails- and it shows! They have an array of cocktails with a variety of liquors- so there is definitely something for everyone (even a selection of cocktails!). The food was French with exquisite presentation. We ate the steak tartare, onion tart, pork croquette and baguette with chicken skin butter! WOW! Everything had intense flavors that complemented each other! For entrees, my husband and I shared the Australian Wagyu steak (large, like 16oz I think), steak & frites and the lamb. The night took a spectacular turn with the chef herself came out with a couple entrees! It was such a pleasure to meet such a badass chef! Overall, we were thrilled with our first experience and can’t wait to go back! The atmosphere was sexy/swanky, and despite loud noise levels, a good time was definitely had by all!

Love the vibe of the restaurant but the food wasn’t as good as I hoped it would be. Didn’t knock our socks off.

What amazing date spot. We love Tara Monsod’s Animae and her unique come packaged in an exciting new way. Maybe best gnocci we have ever had!

Great vibe, 2nd time here since the opening, nice to see the pictures on the wall and drapes have a much warmer feel, mainly got appetizers- especially the tuna tartare, all very delicious, the drinks had way too much ice, probably young bartender, causing watered down taste and resulting in it hardly being a drink. I'll come back for dinner, but will be doing my drinks elsewhere.

Food and wine were great! Waygu steak was amazing along with the onions mushrooms side. There for anniversary dinner, hostess congratulated us upon seating, server never mentioned anything about it from start to finish. Even asking if any dessert was wanted, I had to initiate the comment that it’s our anniversary. For that price point of a dinner, not acceptable.
