Le Coq is James Beard Best Chef finalist Tara Monsod’s new wave French steakhouse. Inspired by the modern Parisian culinary landscape, chef Tara reinvents classic dishes through her signature approach, blending cross-cultural references and ingredients for a distinctly SoCal expression of French cuisine. Bright touches and hyper-seasonal products ground the menu with San Diego style, while nods to chef Tara’s Southeast Asian background are interwoven throughout. Located in downtown La Jolla in a 1930’s historic building with exposed brick walls, steel trusses, and a barrel-vaulted ceiling. Into this storied shell is inserted a posh 1970’s diner club.

Why they're an Icon

Executive chef: Tara Monsod

From the OpenTable editors: The latest hotspot from powerhouse restaurant group Puffer Malarkey Collective, Le Coq is where you go for modern takes on French classics with SoCal and Asian influences. James Beard Award-nominated chef Tara Monsod dazzles with standout dishes like a duck l’orange with tamarind puree, kumquat, and chicory. Original exposed brick walls in the historic 1930s building, red velvet booths, and lush plants add to the swanky Parisian vibe.

Great ambiance with a very unique decor. Certain dishes we really liked, others were good (but not great). Expensive but worth a special occasion for sure. We'll be back and try some new things.

This was our first visit to Le Coq and we were quite pleased with everything. We had a great date night. We started with the mussels and the caviar. After that we had the rack of lamb and the steak frites. Everything was delicious. The atmosphere was enjoyable. The service was great. All in all a great time.

This was a wonderful dinner, great food, service and ambience. I highly recommend a stop if you are visiting La Jolla. Even a dinner in the bar area is worth making a reservation.

The restaurant "make over and ambiance is impressive from the former Herringbone restaurant. The service was great, but the food was mediocre. The steak tartar was "good", but lacked in overall taste. Same for the lamb chops, which lacked flavor (no sauce) and were overcooked. I ordered medium rare, but it came out medium. The gnocchi pasta was just ok, with a mild sauce. The sweetbreads were good, but did not have a great French sauce, which we are used to, having lived in Europe where "ris de veau" (sweetbreads) is a signature dish in Belgium and France. They just need to bring the food quality up to a level similar to go along with the outstanding decor and ambiance!

Pretty run of the mill expensive trying to be cool fare. Bread was barely warm (and $12) but the salty butter was nice. Sweetbreads appetizer portion was good for two people who were trying it for the first time, although I’d like to try it not deep fried someday. Cerise et citron drink was delicious and spicy in a fun, not overpowering way. Gnocchi was lovely and soft and made very good with a few twists of pepper. Basque cheesecake was too sour. Chocolate mousse cake was tasty on the top half (mousse) but hard on the lower half (brownie). Praline ice cream was good. Wait staff was numerous but slow, especially for a Wednesday when there was hardly anyone there. Ambience was very odd. Music was loud and featured the n-word a lot!

Wow wow wow! My husband and I went for date night and it did not disappoint. I saw that on Wednesday night they have a special deal of table side flambé of a whole chicken for two people. It comes with a bistro salad, a baguette and chocolate mouse cake. It was so delicious and what a presentation!

Music was loud and distasteful. We had high expectations of the food from San Diego magazine recommendation. But Seafood overcooked and drowned in oil. My own steak flavorless. Frits ok. Wines excellent but do not make up for overall food quality. Baguette only excellent food offering.

Le Coq was on my list for a few weeks-months now. I just got back from a trip to Paris so naturally, was looking forward to more French inspired food. While the food overall was delicious, it definitely has an asian-fusion flair. My favorites of the entire meal were actually the bistro salad and the pistachio mousseline dessert. Cocktails were wonderful and very well done/balanced. I favored the Framboise Tonic (gin based cocktail, a Negroni-riff) and The Lumiere (I believe this was mentioned as a seasonal cocktail). With the onion tart sliding in for an honorable mention... Ambience was terrific and whoever designed the interior did a great job. Some tables were a little tight in proximity, but overall not a bother to the atmosphere. Great lively date night spot if you're looking for a more elevated experience.
