This historically unique location houses the new restaurant from Matt O'Neil chef/owner of The Blue Ox in Lynn. O'Neil collaborates with Executive Chef, Daniel Gursha, formerly of Bambara, Cambridge and A Voce and Bouley in New York City, offering a progressive New England concept, where traditional 19th-century dishes, cocktails, and techniques will be elevated with 21st-century resources.

Place is cool. Donuts are awesome. We ordered the pastrami Ruben Benedict Disappointed in the fact instead of hollandaise with a touch of thousand island, it was a salty nasty salad dressing, we didn't finish it.

It was our first visit, and the noise level upon entering was disappointing; I honestly thought Ledger would be closer to a fine dining ambiance; my mistake. Our tiny table was one in a long line of small tables, another table about a foot to the right and a one a foot to the left. My point is it’s very tight. The oysters were magnificent; whoever is opening them knows what they’re doing. The duck french onion soup and the frisée salad were excellent, as was the salmon and steak frites. The salad on the steak plate was soggy and completely unnecessary. And the 1996 Margaux speaks for itself. Given the level of noise (I’m hard of hearing as a result of brain surgery), I don’t believe we will return, but that has nothing to do with the food or the excellent service.

Terrific dinner to celebrate my husband’s birthday! The hostess was friendly and attentive when we arrived, seated timely for our reservation. The pop overs and roasted Brussel Sprouts were perfect for appetizers. My husband had the burger which he loved. I had the chicken which was great. Tasty and well prepared. We were too full for dessert and the server surprised us with a birthday cookie and candle which was a perfect ending to a lovely dinner! Our server Vanessa was terrific! Lovely, attentive and sweet. One of the best servers out there! The runner and all the staff worked well together to take care of us and all guests.

Brunch (pastrami hash, Dutch baby) was fantastic. Service great! Frequent visitors to Salem January through March, been hearing how great it is for years now. Seems we weren't being steered wrong- Will definitely be back for dinner now!

Let me start by saying that we ABSOLUTELY LOVE THIS PLACE. Ledger is our go to place for special occasions, and we will continue to be back. On this visit however, there were a few minor issues that we haven't previously experienced here. The Popovers, an absolute must everytime we come, were a touch overcooked and tasted it. Also the cocktails at $15 a pop shouldn't be 80% ice in my opinion. And while I understand that this place features the grill on the kitchen, the vegetable medley on my chicken entree had several pieces of delecata squash that were beyond a good char. As mentioned, I'm sure this is a "one off" experience, as nothing like this has ever happened before, but I believe in honest feedback as a way to grow and improve, not necessarily just to be critical. I've appreciated this place for the better part of the last 7 or 8 years, and know that everything can't be perfect everytime, no matter how hard we try. Chef Daniel, and this culinary team are very skilled (there's a reason he was previously nominated for a James Beard award), and the FOH staff is always attentive and welcoming!

Our experience at this establishment was nothing short of exceptional. The cuisine was great, with each dish crafted to perfection. The cocktails were masterfully balanced, offering a delightful complement to the meal. The popovers at the start were an absolute highlight, setting the stage for an unforgettable dining experience. My mushroom pasta was simply outstanding—every bite reminiscent of, if not surpassing, the flavors I’ve enjoyed in Italy. The ambiance was equally impressive, creating the perfect setting for a memorable evening. I wholeheartedly recommend this place to anyone seeking an extraordinary culinary experience.
