   I am not a fan of the black interior and the disco music, but the food was good and the service was very rapid and attentive. My Tom ka Gai was served at best only luke warm and cooled quickly thereafter. My wife's soup was cold and she said it was tasteless but the shrimp in it was good. My salmon main course was very good as was my wife's main course. We like Makiin, but it is a tad expensive because of its location and the decor. My all time favorite Thai restaurant was Pok Pok in Portland, Or. It was in a run down shed of a building but the cuisine inside served one of the best meals I have eaten anywhere in the world. You do not need fancy if your cooking is great.

   We had dinner at Makiin with a couple of friends and had a fantastic experience. The atmosphere was warm and inviting. There was a live band playing in the adjacent room behind the bar, so it was a bit loud. Other than that, we thoroughly enjoyed our dinner. The waiter was attentive & service was good. Since our reservation was at 6 PM (Happy hour ends at 7 PM, I think?), we were able to order some cocktail drinks from the Happy hour menu at 1/2 price (average price was $9 per drink as opposed to $18). We ordered Hua Hin Mango (highly recommended), Mystiny, Pu Lae pineapple drinks & all were quite good. We also had double-order dishes to share — lemongrass chicken skewers, shrimp crispy cakes which was “so so”, hot basil mussel, ocean salad, papaya salad, drunken noodle, and Thai Street noodle magic. My 2 favorite dishes were the ocean salad & hot basil mussels. We were too stuffed by the end of our dinner and did not order dessert. Though, I have had their mango sticky rice dessert previously & it’s quite good.

   Would have given this restaurant a better rating, but we had a reservation for two, and when we arrived, there were many four tops available. The hostess sat us at a two top which is no big deal. Except that it was next to their only other two top which was occupied. These two table were seriously within 2 feet of each other when the entire dining room was almost empty. Very awkward. Hostess refused us any other table so we had to sit at the bar. They need better table arrangements to accommodate parties of two. As we sat at the bar, we watched this same scenario play out with two other couples.

   The experience was ruined by 3 factors: 1) the hostess 2) the waiter 3) the table given. I had a reservation for 6, upon arrival I informed the hostess about the change from 6 to 5 guests. Then she told me to wait, while she disappeared in the back, I stood at the front for over 5 minutes, long enough that the other hostess came up to see why I was waiting there like I was in timeout in a fairly empty restaurant. The reservation was made days ago and still they gave us the worst table possible in the entire restaurant, next to the kitchen’s swinging door. That door was constantly in motion, the eye-irritating bright light was coming from the kitchen while the whole restaurant had a dark ambiance, and the constant commotion and loud noise coming from the kitchen made it impossible to enjoy our conversation at the table. Last but not least the waiter responses to simple questions like “would you recommend this drink if I like my martini not too sweet?” and “would you recommend this meal if I like the curry very spicy?” His response was - back to back! - “you just have to order it if you want to find out.” I was shocked by the level of poor quality of service. This was definitely a one and done experience at MaKiin in Houston.

   The decor was awesome. We went for the afternoon tea, and we were disappointed to find out that they stop serving tea at 4:00pm, so we had to rush to place our order before they stopped serving. Also, online it says that they serve a black tea, but in person they only served a lemongrass tea and a butterfly pea tea. The butterfly pea tea was thick and undrinkable. However, the food bites they served with the tea were delicious. I would go back, but not for afternoon tea!

   This was our first visit to the restaurant and we were completely blown away. We sat at the bar and had great service provided by Lin and Ryan. They were both knowledgeable about the menu and willingly answered our questions and made suggestions. Both our entrees were full of flavor and the presentation was amazing. We would highly recommend MaKiin for a Thai outing.

   The atmosphere was ok customer service was good. The biggest issue was that we were allowed to make a reservation at 2:30 when the restaurant closed at 3. While the server was nice we felt rushed to place our order, eat, and leave. The food was just ok, I had egg shells in my noodles and on the egg itself . The kitchen was already closed so I wasn’t able to have the food remade. I was underwhelmed with the food and the drinks were average. It was my first time I probably will not be making another appearance.
